Morality Question: Do you need to tell lies to survive sales?

I don't mean criminal or damaging lies or telling lies under oath.

I mean outright lie? No - Exaggerate some expectations or verbally praise the abilities of my internal team to a prospect even though I know they consistently fall short of competency? Abso-fucking-lutely.

Also, the real lying shows up when it's forecast time and looking over the weekly metrics and I'm not alone there.

Doing a red chili mainly because I couldn’t find tomatillos yesterday to make green chili. Brisket leads the way in this one.

absolutely not. If you have to lie then either your product sucks or you suck at selling. Either way, change companies or get better training.

Absolutely not, and if my rep does it in front of a client, I have ways of walking it back immediately after because I am not letting that slide.

Lying to yourself is something entirely different in this case. More of a coping mechanism than a morality question. :)

No, lying will just create further larger headaches down the road. If you feel you need to lie to sell whatever you are selling then step back and figure out if you should actually be selling whatever that product or service is. If it is so bad you have to lie to prop it up then it sucks and you should walk away.

I think this comes back to what do you see as the job of a sales person. This may be too philosophical, but that's how I approach sales. I see sales as not just pushing a product on someone, but solving a problem. Whether the person has the problem of wanting to look good for prom or creating a better gtm practice, your goal is to figure out what will serve them best. I think that's why the phrase, "How can I help you today?" really rings true for me. Your job is a problem solver, figure out there problem, present your products, and how your products can solve their problem. Tell them the other options out there, and get to the truth of their pain and how much their pain is worth to solve. This isn't in order, but you see what I'm saying here. If you're staying true to your purpose, then there is no room for lying.

The answer to this question is no. The real question is, "will i feel the need to tell lies to survive in sales?" and that will always be there. The temptation to say "yes we can solve that problem" and be the hero is great, especially at the end of the process. It's one of the hardest parts of the job IMO and what causes a lot of frustration when expectations aren't met after the sale

To parrot everyone here, don’t lie to your customers! Someone will find out and it will hurt you more than your company. I would throw my company under the bus if it meant that I can keep selling to those customers in the future.

I think the real question here is if you believe in your product. if you feel you are lying to the customer because you don't believe in the product.. you might be in trouble. Most people say that a real salesman can sell anything, but for me, I need to be excited about what I'm selling.

No. Take the long view. Your value is diminished over time by not being transparent and truthful.

It may be convenient or more lucrative in the near-term. But if you're planning to do this for a while it will catch up with you.

If you do, you're in the wrong role. All of the selling best practices that are out there don't work in the absence of truth. Lying is convenient, but they tack up quickly.

Great sales professionals tell the truth convincingly

Lies may benefit in the short term but will come back to bite you and will take all the fun out of working deals. If you’re in an industry where people are very interconnected, it’ll be the death of your ability to grow within it

My ultimate answer is no.

I have found, however, that increasingly my competition is stretching truths to real people in which costs me clients. It is getting harder and harder to try to win people over being the “ethical one,” although I will never stoop and/or change that as I do believe, in the long run, being truthful and transparent is long lasting and fulfilling, not to mention good sleep medicine
