Move from AM to SDR, AM, or AE

Hi War Room,

Currently I'm a Channel Account Manager in the Federal space I sell hardware (computers, servers, storage) and I'm curious what role I should look for next.

Before this role I was a Junior AM for 2 years so I supported other AMs. I've never done any real selling, only AM work in the large deal space (100k-20M). I don't really like the monotony of AM work even though I'm good at it, I would much rather be looking at big picture stuff, conducting meetings, and spending time talking with my customer. Right now 90% of my day is spent building quotes, working in spreadsheets, talking with finance, and managing the business.

Should I look for SDR/BDR, AE, or AM roles? Currently my OTE is 85k so I think an SDR/BDR role might be a lateral move but would help me gain actual selling skills. But if I'm good at AM work should I focus on that instead?

Best Regards,

Right now you’re doing what’s considered more “advanced” selling skills in building quotes and interacting with customers beyond the point of prospecting. I would not give up the relative seniority and slide to SDR. I would advise a lateral move (with a likely pay bump) to AM - many AM roles will give you the opportunity to work on prospecting new people into existing accounts, etc. or to cross-sell new products, and it’s easier to then move to net new account AE role if that’s what you really want to do.

Thank you! That’s what I’ll look for then.

I think a move to AM in Saas could be a solid fit.

You have shown that you can grow and advance your skills, by getting promoted, and the deal size is no joke.

How many customers do you have to manage currently? how much money are they all worth combined?

Thanks for the response! I manage one large channel/partner account. It’s a 2 in the box account because of size. The contracts I managed did 130m but total $200m last year.

I’ve never had to prospect. I’ve only worked with preexisting whale accounts. That’s why I’m curious if I should take an SDR/BDR role before jumping into an AE role.

You're overqualified for most SDR roles and your base is much higher than like 90% of them.
As an AM you can build business as well - look for opportunities to expand your company's footprint in your market.
