moving on from sales?

The usual end of quarter pressure seems to have hit a little bit harder than normal this time and it got me thinking.

What are the actual possibilities for career growth after sales?

Besides the obvious sales management. What are some of the actual paths people have taken after being an IC for majority of their career?

Do most of the people here just plan on staying in sales for the rest of your working lives or is there other career goals at play?

Just looking to see what people are doing/done.

once you're in sales...

Hiring managers respect a strong sales record, so you can transition into other departments in your co. If you’ve built a strong reputation. If you’re switching completely, you can sell your experience into anything your want to do - Ops, project management, start your own co.,…

You can do anything you want. You can go into management, training, operations, enablement, etc.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
You can do it internally in a lot of cases. But if you're trying to switch companies and careers, yeesh.

There is little to no chance you can switch companies after being a seller and be hired for anything other than a sales role. You would need to know someone very high up to make that happen. The best chance of getting out of sales into another role like marketing, CS, or ops would be from within your current company.

Sales skills transfer to a loting other jobs. Imagine a job without convincing or negotiation.

a lot of sale people start their own business.

The best sales people will be able to leverage their skills into really any position in the buisness that they would do well in.  Barring any overt technical barriers, most divisions can benefit from a what is essentially a project and people manager hybrid with hopefully some decent presentation skills.

Oh wow I fucked up my vote, not sure how to change that.

yeah i've noticed that sales skills really are something that aren't exclusive to sales.
With that being said, those who i've observed to have gone from Sales to another department still to some degree manage some sort of sale process.
Is your goal to stay in sales the whole time?

My goals are fluid. Three years ago I would have told you I have zero interest in leadership, and today I was looking at LinkedIn and casually trying to map out a path to a VP role. So I can't really give you an answer.

If leadership is in anyone's plan, I can say that Sales ranks as like number 3 or 4 on the list of Most Popular First Jobs of CEOs behind the usual suspects of Software Engineer, Consultant, Finance, etc.

The ability to leverage yourself can be life changing and it's a skill that's honed well in sales.

I’d get a desk job at a large bank making $100k base and some annual bonuses.

I mean baseball was my sport but Euro football (soccer) or NBA would be very, very fun.
