Believe it or not i'll be paying less in Manhattan than in LA. Prices are nuts out here.ย

Exactly--my company is based in NYC (I'm remote), offices in Manhattan. No one lives in Manhattan, but that's where we stay when we travel. Most live in Brooklyn, Queens, or LI City.

I think a lot of early 20s people live in Manhattan, like myself, we just have roommates.

My sister-in-law lived in Hells Kitchen for about a year back in 2012. Loved visiting, just don't think I could live on the island.

Oh nice, she was in the action. I prefer being in a quiet spot so Iโ€™m in lower manhattan. Itโ€™s not for most people tbh. The rent is just sooo high for no reason. I know I will only do this for a couple of years.

I live in Hoboken and would take the ferry into our office on Lex before going full time remote. Out of 10 people on my team, I think only 1 actually lived in manhattan.ย

As a former NYC resident... Do you have to? It's expensive as hell.

Where did you move to after NYC and why? I'm still in NYC and I'm always curious where people go after

I moved from NYC to Austin, TX in 2011. Was working for a Series A startup that wanted to expand and CEO decided NYC was too expensive. Me and VP of Sales moved there, found space, and hired a team of SDRs, AEs, and AMs. I left the company after about a year but spent the next 7 years in ATX. Keeping an NYC salary sans income tax was great, plus I was able to afford my own place and not have to deal with roommates. The only downside was needing to drive everywhere vs MTA.

I'm working fully remote so no commutes to take into consideration.

Based on your experience I'm going to assume you are on the younger side.

As a young person I'd recommend East Village, Lower East side, or Williamsburg (don't sleep on Brooklyn). I know a few people who are in the UES who really like it as well.

Stay out of little italy - two bridges - fidi and anything between 45-60th on either side of the city.ย

I'm in NYC and I personally wouldn't recommend Manhattan as it would be VERY expensive for you to live as comfortable as you do in LA, it's just not worth it. Of course you can't beat the easy access of Manhattan so it just depends on your preferred lifestyle.

I'd say Brooklyn, baby!! Williamsburg, DTBK area, also Prospect Park area are great. You can get to lower Manhattan just as quick if you were to live in Upper East Side but much more quiet, homey, and what you're paying for is more worth it.

Thank you Nairobi! I would say both! Lenox, Yorkville, and East Harlem are my top 3 neighborhoods so far. Would love to hear any local spots to grab a drink or a bite to eat.

@braintank - Rents on UES area apartments have a much more favorable combo of rent and space than any properties i've found in lower Manhattan

Gotcha, well I prefer to live in lower manhattan so, unfortunately, I could not help you with those places.

As for food, I went to Pera Soho and it was great. It gets crowded on Fridays and Saturdays so you will need to make a reservation. Her Name Was Carmen has good fancy drinks too, the food is good as well.

My friend shared with me his list of places so here you go. I have not tried them yet so no idea if itโ€™s good, and this is pre-covid so donโ€™t know if these places are still open.

Edit: I tried to copy-paste his list here but the formatting is awful. So whenever, we'll have DMs here I'll send it to you.

i'd look in murray hill/kips bay/gramercy area - being above the 90's in NYC can feel isolating. Almost like a totally different borough...

1.) What neighborhood in Manhattan
2.) Are you 100% tied to Manhattan? (You can get a lot better vibes in areas of Brooklyn and Queens but don't let me tell you how to live your life)

you will rarely see this BDR to CRO except early stage, hyper growth start ups and people who have stayed at massive companies for an entire generation. the former CEO at BMC was a BDR there and worked his entire career there. most VP's at companies like Cisco are either CEO/head of LOB at other massive companies or have been there for 20 years

I myself moved a few orgs, changed career tracks, and even tried to get out of sales (product management is alluring) before I landed my first sales leadership position. In that process, I learned a lot about what makes a sales org tick from SDRs to Ops, to Marketing, etc...and it's given me a well-rounded perspective.
