Moving to my first VC funded SaaS Start-Up: What to Expect?

Comrades,

I'll be joining a 2 year old VC funded SaaS organization this coming Monday and have prior experience from PE funded small/mid size start up. Curious if the collective has any nugs for me!

Sounds like I made the right decision sans office abuse. Appreciate the insight @cw95

You know, after a year and a half at a PE funded "start-up" that's been my experience largely. A ton of technical debt and a lot of knots in the back ends muddying what we can do for the customer. Hopefully on to greener pastures!

Things move FAST. And because of that, may have limited documentation / process so heads up. But the ride is very fun. Good luck!

Something I'm familiar with in the Org I'm currently leaving. They're bringing me in to help build out sustainable process and craft GTM strategy. I'll be buckling up!

You'll learn that VC's are really the one in control. Lot's of pressure to hit goals

Mostly build as you go. Huge roadmap you start selling. Lots of fun. High pace just get it done mentality. Only 1 thing counts - growth.

At my third and just be prepared for constant change. This is nothing new. But at my first I was on four teams in three years, that was pretty stable considering.

Second one I had four bosses (one was a consultant) in 12 months.

Third one is dealing with CEO bandwidth problems.

Each one has it's own struggles but one thing I've learned is nothing goes as planned and all you can do is make sales and try to enjoy the experience.

all the VC care's about is profit. If the VC is who is running the show, expect very aggressive quotas and a lot of pressure to perform.

If the VC is just sitting in the background cutting checks and the company has its founders, recruited executives, etc running the show then what I said does not apply lol.

I was hired at a really good start up about 4 months ago for a SDR role that I was told I wouldn’t be in for very long. They’re gonna go public in the next year, but Zoom Info reached out to me about an Account exec position. Now I’m wondering if I should take the guaranteed route to AE or let my shares vest and get to AE at the place that took me. Usually I wouldn’t consider jumping so quickly, but AE is AE.
