Moving Up And/Or Out

Dear Fellow Burnt Out Sellers,

I dont have much of a professional network, and would be genuinely grateful for this community's advice. This quarter I took a promotion from Commercial AE to Mid Market AE.

Truly I was hesitant to leave as the commercial role was stable/lucrative and the mid market role has historically been very sink or swim.

With this promotion I am facing a set of new challenges, none larger than the feeling that this role is unsustainable. I work for a great company on a verge of IPO, so my plan is to try my hardest and whatever happens happens. Any advice on weathering the storm or potentially planning my exit strategy half a year from now?

Maintain a positive headspace and keep working on the things you can control. When we feel pressure we often latch onto and obsess over things that we truly cannot control like leadership's decisions or coworker bullshit. Stay in your lane, work your tail off, and when youg get that sweet, sweet IPO money you get your ass out.

I cashed out in a big way from an IPO. It sucks not selling, but ironically, you might be making more money (from the shares) by staying there.

Curious why you took the promotion?

Fair question, wasnt an easy decision. I want to work my way up to management and there wasnt a path to that at my current job.

Figured im better off taking a promotion/RSU's than staying as a top seller in a smaller department too long

Did the RSUs vest immediately?

No, however I get about 9 months of guaranteed job security, by which point we'll have IPO'd and my total shares will have doubledย
