Mullet over and let me know

I have been with my company for four years and I absolutely love it here. They are firm believers in letting their reps "run their own business." This essentially means that if you are hitting your number, we don't care how you get it done. I have always been 1 or 2 at end of each month and have NEVER missed my quarter number.

Like many others, I was not able to get my hair cut for many months during the initial "Rona" outbreak. Up until now, I have always kept my hair high and tight with the hard part but after seeing what a beautiful mane of hair I have, I decided to cut it into a glorious mullet. I get it trimmed twice a month and keep it looking fresh.

My leadership team thinks it looks unprofessional and wants me to cut it. I think it's some total BS.

Thoughts?

Should leadership have a say in your hair style?

A mullet oozes confidence. If someone trying to sell to me has a mullet, I know that they're the real deal. Keep pumpin those numbers and conditioning that mane.

Welcome to discrimination.

Sincerely,

Women, Black Women, Asian, LGBTQ, BIPOC,

On the flip side, you are always a free agent.

You can easily find another sales job.

It's ok to remind them of that in an appropriate non-cocky way, especially if you are hitting numbers.

Here's how (some are not quite PC) but then again, I've never been known for that. Use with caution. I would never want someone to leave a job for any reason. We need money to live, we need healthcare, we have responsibilities. That doesn't mean you cannot find a culture that works for you.

1. Thanks for your suggestions. I am confused, have my clients complained about it?

2. Which part of my hair is actually preventing me from doing my job?

3. Who exactly is complaining, and specifically, word for word what are they saying?

4. I just read the employee handbook, I don't see anything in there.

5. What other things are you telling other people about their appearance that needs to change.

6. Can you please show me the "dress-code" document?

7. Even if the dress-code says, "professional" there is no clear cut definition of what that actually means. So if you could please explain and by all means be sure you include every type of employee you may want to hire.

So, I'll start by saying that I really love the in-depth feedback and greatly appreciate it!  I will say though, that it might be a bit of a reach comparing this situation to those groups, also BIPOC?  I feel silly for not knowing.....?

I'm not sure I'm following here.  At first, it sounds like you're saying as long as it's clean and kept up it's ok.   Then it sounds like you're saying that any long hair that is unkept is considered a mullet.  Can you clafiy?

im a no either way as that is not really their call, unless it is part of the JD you signed. But you stated you have it nice and trimmed just happens to be a mullet. Where i went in the second half is if it is truly unruly and not kept up and you are customer facing, maybe (still a maybe) they have a point if outlined in contract. Its conflicting for me so i am spinning and not answering, sorry.  But i think it is a no either way

I cannot stand when leadership gets involved in looks. It reminds me of when I was a 'kid' and my parents told me I would be unhireable if I got a tattoo. Errmmm I don't want to work somewhere that judges my worth on how I look, it's not like I am Post Malone. Jeshush

I ran into a similar issue. I was wearing trucker hats and t-shirts on calls with long hair and got told to clean it up. I still have long hair just no more hats but I try to keep it cleaner and pulled back. I still get comments but nothing commanding as long as I stay on top of the leaderboard

I'm a dude with some long hair, but yeah the mullet is a serious move. I think it's personally awesome, but I could see it ruffle feathers internally and externally.

I guess it comes down to your customers and if it effects them. If you tend to sell into places where that is considered fun it can be a great way to start a convo and stay in their mind. Every email you send will, in their mind, be from "that guy with the mullet!".

On the other hand, if it's gonna make things harder on you then you probably should consider if it's worth it. Would you be willing to be 3-4 each quarter for your hair? Not a rhetorical question, but if customer balk then it's something to consider.

Ooof @Telehealth_2the_Moon You make a good point.  It hasn't come to the point where it has affected my ability to forge relationships with customers.   You're right though, if it was between the mullet and losing sales, get out the clippers! lol.  Appreciate the feedback:)

I hope it never does, I want you to keep crushing it, leave them chasing behind your mullet.

Just comes down to your customers? On average will more people like it than dislike it or are you selling to a bunch of stogey people that spend the first 5 minutes of the meeting eyeing each other's suits to see who went custom and who bought off the rack?

Do you really want to be known as the "sales guy with a mullet" to your clients? I mean...I guess if you're selling to hair stylists or fashion designers where mullets might be considered cool, but in most industries most people are either going to think it's unprofessional, stupid looking, or reduce you to a caricature of mullet guy.

Wow hahaha.. Bold Move.

Personally I love it and I love it even more that you're just crushing quotas and owning it like a mofo.

I cannnnn see how it would ruffle some feathers, and it's certainly a gray area, should leadership have say in looks? No, probably not... buttt where is the line? I don't even know myself but I can see how people would be like okayyyy ummm..

Also- as others mentioned I think it depends too on who you're selling to- can it be funny and appreciated by your audience or do they double take and not take you seriously? Sounds like it hasn't had any impact yet but just some thoughts to consider.

I wish I had the confidence to rock it but I definitely could not pull it off- hats off to you! haha

I think that if you’re making money, no one has any right to tell you jack.

the question should be whether your clients care. TBH - I think being different can actually work in your favor because you’re memorable .

@Ace well, I have basically my whole body tattooed so I'm definitely under scrutiny for appearance.  Always long sleeves. Always buttoned up. Understated dress code.

If the client would like that kind of thing, I can always roll up the sleeves on my shirt. I mean, I have a lot of skulls and things on my forearms/wrists. My whole back is a giant skull haha.

Just gotta read the room. But my corporate doesn't want to see it ever.

@Captain_Q  I don’t think it’s a bad idea - just know that you will probably have to wear long sleeves in certain situations. Would you really wear a T-shirt to a meeting anyway?

You also get to a point in your career where it doesn’t matter anymore. Like my last one. I ligit worked with Mitt Romney and he didn’t bat an eyelash at all the extensive demonic/ slightly pornographic tats because my professional reputation was solid af. One of many extremely conservative clients I had, and it was fine.

I actually grew a mullet too during Chinavirus. My bosses loved it. Thought it was great considering my upkeep of it. I'd suggest you direct them to the economist article that came out last year that stated business mullets are the new trend. If they still won't accept it, tell them to piss off.
