Multiple people leaving the company at once

I currently work for a software company that is based in Finland, but we have a small U.S. team that consists of about 20 people (or consisted I should say). Over the last month or so, 6 people from the U.S. team have quit, which doesn't seem like a lot but that's 30% of the team. I also want to note that we don't have that high of a turn over rate, everyone that quit has been on the team for over 1.5 years. Should I be concerned? Is there something I'm missing?

Should I be concerned if multiple people are quitting the team all at once?

It's definitely a red flag, should you run as fast as you can? Not always. First, it's important to understand why people are leaving and identify if it makes sense for you to leave or no. Don't make a hasty decision just because some people are leaving, make sure you have all the info before making a decision.

Agreed & good advice! Our U.S. team is also fully remote so now that people are starting to go back to offices, I wonder if that has something to do with it. As in, they would rather be in an office than working from home

That could be a huge factor for sure, I like WFH, would not like to go back.

The market is hot. If people arent 100% happy or there is something that is missing/stressing them out more than they would like, they will chase another dream.

I know why for a couple of them & luckily those don't have any impact on me. For example, one person left for to pursue a role that our company did not offer. Another left for an outbound position because they were looking to make more money with commission. So a couple of them do sound like personal decisions which is a good thing I guess.

Do you know if your company has been making efforts to retain people?

Small ones here & there. Looking back on it though, it seems like the efforts they've been making are all directed at the EU team

There is a very big demand for salespeople right now, many companies are hiring, so it may not necessarily be because the company is doing badly, but more because other companies are making better offers to pick up good talent, perhaps you will be next?

I think it's a red flag. There could be many reasons that would explain 1 or 2 but 6 people in a short period of time would definitely have me wondering why. Why don't you ask any of your colleagues that have left what their reason was?

Yes, ask them why they left then decide for yourself whether it is bad or not.

Luckily the couple of reasons I do know don't have any impact on me, but it's the ones that I don't know that could be more worrisome. I'll reach out & see if they're willing to provide any insight, if I was smart I would've asked why when they told me they were leaving lol

30% Y-o-Y is okay but in a month ......... not sure

Why are they leaving? Is it a new opportunity that came their way or they were forced (implicit) to find a new one as something is not happening as expected or promised to them. No sure if you conduct Exit interview but that can help you know the root cause to fix this.

I know some of the reasons were new opportunities, which those are understandable. I feel like every company has those people they expect to never leave & a good chunk of the people that quit were in that boat for me

down voters are marketing spies
In America they don't have some basic social services (healthcare) so many jump ship to gain better benefits.

Or the leadership team in your US office is toxic... I would lean on that.

It could be nothing or a red flag. I'd call them and ask, what happened?

If they're management it's a flaming red flag, but even if they're just boots on the ground I'd say you should keep your ear to the ground.

See if you can leverage your internal network for a little more insight.

Look back into previous convos you have had with those now ex-colleagues and see if anything they mentioned reflects what you go through day to day. You may find you want to leave soon. However, equally, you may be the anomaly!

100% red flag. When I used to work in recruitment, I always asked any company that wanted to work with me what their turnover rate was, if they didn't know the answer (they are the people hiring) or tried to be sneaky or gave a number that was too high, i wouldn't work with them because that showed me there was something wrong with the company.

In most cases the issues were one of the following:
- bad environment
- company had no direction / bad management
- micromanagement
- favoritism
- lack of communication
- overpromising

Why don't you just ask them why they quit?

Red flag definitely. Depending on your relationship with those quitting I'd reach out and get their side of the story.

But in my experience, if it's getting to that point there is some serious writing on the wall you might be missing.

Previous company is losing salespeople left and right, think I made a great decision leaving. Anyone else have a similar experience?
