My boss Called me out on wanting to leave....

TLDR: My boss called me out and was super chill about it and is going to help me get my money sooner (what!?)

OK SO another update is this fucking saga of a job transition.

My last post I said I was just going to sit tight and lay low.

I did have a meeting with my CRO where i WAS going to be open and honest and lay it all out there. At the last second i decided NOT to do that and the convo was just super high level and I talked about all the change that has been happening after lay offs.

SO

Yesterday in my 1 :1 with my boss (chief Commercial Officer) he says

"you know, Ive only seen someone so concerned about the timing of their bonus for 2 reasons. They are buying a house and need the cash, or they want to leave. Now im not saying thats what you are planning to do.....but if it is......just be up front with me and I can help you."

This shocked me. But i decided to take the bait.

I pretty much laid it all out there.

He responded in such a positive way I was a little taken back. He told me a number of times how there is no hard feeling, how he appreciates me, wants me to stay, loves the work Ive done, but also gets it.

He told me he will look to expedite my bonus and that the CRO will be on board with this as well.

He also shared my sentiment that making a move NOW and being open about it actually HELPS him with his planning as the year is kicking off.

This is a MASSIVE deal, and I really appreciate how he is handling this.

BUT HERE IS WHY THIS IS HAPPENING: (I really still dont suggest everyone take my approach)

  1. we have a small team where everyone knows who we are. I am not just some number to leadership. (when i talked to the CRO she knew my whole pipeline)
  2. My boss and I do have a very good relationship (besides me having MAJOR concerns about his sales skills and ability to lead haha)
  3. Im producing. I hit all numbers asked of me and did better than expected in a few areas.

If these three things were not in place, I dont think I would have had this happen.

so, we will see what happens next.

do you think I will still get f'ed over?

Great leadership wants their team to succeed in life, not just with their company.

Love hearing this. Keep us posted.

Really hoping they had good intentions. I had a manager who would act friendly to fish information and then you it against you.

Love it. Really glad to hear this for you. As stated on your previous post, you've gone about this in exactly the right way. Your CCO sniffing out your intentions and responding in the way they did is the sign of good leadership. Maybe you can negotiate this into making it favorable for you to stay?

He also mentioned that the CRO called him as soon as I ended my call with her. And she told him she thinks im trying to leave.

So my CCO had some intel coming to him haha. What was crazy is that both the CRO and CCO believed that getting the money that is owed to me and letting me move on is the best decision for both parties. I was concerned they would take a selfish view on it.

I also was able to explain to my boss what my true intentions were and what i WANTED to do, but felt like I couldnt do because of the risks. he appreciated that.

Dang! Happy to hear it worked out. Since the manager seems to be handling you leaving extremely well, any reservations about staying?

Reservations about staying? like am I second guessing my decision to leave?
No. the main factors for me leaving cant be influenced by how my boss reacts, or what the company says.im really solid on my decision to leave.

That is awesome, I see so many companies not even trying to making an attempt to retain even their best employees

You boss sounds like a good guy. That's a contact you want to keep moving forward. Hopefully the money happens, but don't spend it before you get it.
Be careful what you say though as you leave. Keep leadership and sales comments to yourself. Be positive in leaving - you have an opportunity which is better for you and your family. Have nothing but good things to say about everyone and everything.

It's stories like this that show that not every org is has poor leadership. It's great that they're showing up for you in this way.
