My company is getting acquired... what now?

For those in SaaS, i've heard horror stories of companies acquiring a small company and laying off the entire sales org. What have you all experienced going through acquisitions?

For context, I work a small company that's getting bought by a F500 company.

Are they acquiring your to weld your functionality onto theirs...or to add to their portfolio?

I was acquired into an F50. They bought us to expand their GTM strategy in IoT. They couldn't get rid of us since their whole sales org had no knowledge of what we sold or how to sell it. I know of 3 people from that team that are still reps at the larger org.

^^ this happened to my group at a company acquired by a much larger company. We were actually left completely alone for years before a reorg moved us all around. They actually dropped my group in the reorg, only for me to get a panicked call from an SVP desperate to retain me in his group. That was one of the most chaotic but wonderful years in sales I ever had.
Anyway, I would definitely get the inside scoop on why you were acquired and intel on plans for your group.

I've heard both good experiences and bad ones.
maybe ask around and figure out what's the game plan so you are safe.

Honestly, I have seen people getting fired and absorbed both. You might want to find some insider news and take an action accordingly.

We went through an acquisition early 2020 and our company runs almost exactly as it did before. As we were heading into it I was putting some feelers out for new roles just in case, but (thankfully) never needed to.

This happened to me 4 years ago. First major acquisition for this large company and honestly they didn’t know what to do with us. I had 3 record earning years where everyone was getting paid and they let us be. 4th year in, things have started to tighten up.. while it’s not the same as it used to be, I’m still sticking around.
YMMV obviously. You may want to think about how your solution compliments the acquirers portfolio. In my case, we were another back office sku that I could sell as an overlay, but also still run individual deals

Just like no one on the floor knows how much the board will raise your quota by in their quarterly meeting, no one on the floor knows what the acquisition will do to the sales org.

Be positive, but be prepared. It's common, and understandable, for people to leave after an acquisition for all sorts of reasons

Find out the reason they are buying you. If it’s for the book of business. Make sure your clients love you and collect all evidence of it. If it’s for functionalities do more or less the same lol. But use it to convince them to sell their product.
