My job title is not accurate. What do I do?

I'm an "SAE" and it does not translate into any other SAE position on the planet. I have 6 directors and 25+ reps under me in my territory, I report to the VP, and I do not carry a quota. I get paid off of percentage of reps to quota. I am a closer for those who are struggling with either complex cycles or their general ability.

My responsibility and expectations are everything of a VP minus HR cycles.

It's handicapping my ability to interview because my title does not represent what I do. I do not feel right about making up a more fitting title since that's lying. My company will absolutely not change my title and I think it is part of their retention strategy because they got me by the balls.

What would you do if you were me?

Simple: suggest a title to your VP and HR and explain that it aligns with the market and your actual responsibilities. Sounds like you’re the AVP of Sales or Senior Director

That was attempted and basically met with “if you don’t like it, leave”. Now I would like to.

Alright, then let’s get you out.

On your resume, state on your resume the full extent of your job from a management role, and even bold in: equivalent to Senior Director of Sales.

I’ve interviewed lots of poorly labeled folks in the past, but a bit of context always clears it up.

Thank you. I’ll get to work on truly updating all of the aspects of my job. Is a 6 page resume frowned upon? 😂

6 pages is completely unnecessary. 2 is pushing it.

That was a joke. I’m a one pager only.

dude just make up a title on linked in......just make sure you dont let linked in announce it to your network as a new job or promotion.

your company will never see it.

and if they do? who cares?

I normally dont think titles mean alot, but in this case I totally agree with you. change your title on linked in and in the description put what you do. sounds like it will align perfectly.

You’re either a SR. director / managing director, or a “head of sales”.

MAKE THAT SHIT UP, cause companies care much more about your experience and how it relates to the role they want to fill, rather than a title your company will give you.

It’ll be your chance to weave in your accomplishments, odds are the interviewer won’t challenge what a “xyz of sales” at your current company does vs what they’re supposed to do!

Your resume is what you make it.  Most companies will only verify that you worked there along with the dates you were there.

I'd be careful about LI though.  You can change it to something general like "Sales" or something else and then just put a general description of the company there.  Leave the title and accomplishments for your resume.

I agree, exactly the right move to change LI to a generic “Sales”

I don't see why anyone at your company needs to know if you change your title on your resume. I'd even change it on LinkedIn, just don't make it a post. It's none of their business

I mean, just adjust it. Or can you discuss with your team?

This is a company where the team leads are called “Directors”. They downplay the SAE’s which they have 5 of in the entire company. I’m probably going to have to adjust.

Huh, strange. Since they’ve built it that way you’re right, you can’t just change your title without them going “hey what the heck”
