My patch is looking weak

Started at a great SaaS organization about a month ago. Everything is great so far; enablement, my manager, market leading product BUT my territory is looking pretty weak. It's a lot less accounts than I would have expected and reps already in seat have taken a good chunk of the target accounts in my region. The org is aggressively expanding the Sales org so hiring reps everywhere and shrinking territories. I know this is the typical model when growth companies are scaling but I'm kinda worried it's going to be a long shot to hit my number for the year.

Just wondering if my peeps here have experienced this and how have you handled it in your careers. Also, is it fair to ask in the interview process for your accounts before you accept the offer?

I was in this position. I quit and just started a new role. My new hiring manager sent me my literal account list before I even startedโ€ฆ when the opps are good, thereโ€™s nothing to hide

I did ask questions about the general patch but didnt get into specifics. Going forward, this will be an ask for all my potential employers.ย

Territories are critical because certain markets are bountiful while others are not so much.ย  The coastlines, Chicago, Texas, Tri-State, and Florida/Georgia have always been prime territories.ย  So if you're not in one of those markets and you get assigned rural Wisconsin... good luck amigo.ย ย

Definitely fair to ask in an interview. If they're trying to hide something like that it's a red flag.

Absolutely ask about patch before you accept. I've turned down plenty of offers becuase the patch is shit.

Have you had any resistance from orgs when asking for the entire list of accounts?

Not if you keep asking :)

Patch is my livelihood. If they're not willing to share that gives me a bad vibe.

I've been there before and it's ROUGH.ย  Basically, here's this vacant desert... you have 6 months to turn this into a money-making forest. Don't worry though you're getting world-class training to make this happen. Go get em' champ!ย  *Slaps butt*

yes you should ask about accounts in interview process.ย

and you should at least THINK about leaving.ย

that is a typical motion for growth companies but it is also the WRONG move in my opinion. that is not a move to set you up for success.ย

I'm opening up to the idea of looking elsewhere. First, I'm going to try and land some new business in the next quarter and see how it plays out.

We also had 2 reps from my team leave since I started due to this exact reason. I wish both of them were a little more forth coming when I chatted with them before getting hired on.ย

I'm killing it right now with my current territory. My company is about to shrink territories drastically though to scale the team which definitely has me a little worried. Pushing hard to get promoted before that happens so it won't be my problem anymore lol

thanks babe ๐Ÿ˜˜

it's reached the point I full on went around my boss to his boss's boss, put time on his calendar, spoke to him, and had him put time on the hiring managers calendar to introduce me to him and say he should interview me for it. I'm not playing it when it comes to hitting this enterprise ae role lol

Raise the concern to management but might also be good to start seeing what else is out thereย

This actually happened to me when I first started at my current org. Your territory is an important factor when it comes to hitting quota. I was able to hit mine almost every month with the exception of 1 month but it took a lot more work. You have to be more scrappy when it comes to your prospecting but itโ€™s not impossible. Iโ€™d def talk to your manager about this though.

You always start in shitty territories at any good company. Usually theyโ€™re a couple accounts that will produce and you have to โ€œtryโ€ and sell to the crap accounts. The managers know these accounts suck because everyone has already tried to sell to them and failedโ€ฆ hold on tight and bullshit with the best of em until someone else quits / get promoted and you get into their territoryโ€ฆ.

Have you spoken with your manager about this concern?ย  Its quite valid and he should be protecting you and providing you what you need to make the $$ promised you.ย  No one wants a rep who comes on board and then leaves 1-2months later.

If they don't do anything, then yes, consider going elsewhere.

Personal friend referred a lead which is now being put through pipeline. In my territory but out of my segment, should I hand it over?
