My very first sales job on Monday

I start my very first SDR job on Monday. I'm fully trained through a program, understand what I need to do, and have practice with cold calls.

For context: I am a veteran, was in a fraternity in college, ran the newspaper, and have some experience in private equity.

I'm just curious as to any words of advice War Room members may have on what I should expect? What were some things that I won't find in my "manual" when it comes to being a lowly SDR? What were your first jobs as SDRs like? What's one thing I should learn now - sooner than later?

First and foremost, thank you for your service and sacrifice. Full stop.ย

Second, your military training, skills and mindset have prepared you well for the sales life, so you shouldn't be intimidated. You'll do great just by relying on your own intuition.ย

Third, humbly: Be a sponge. Be coachable. Be humble. Be thick skinned. Don't take things personally. Immerse yourself in it all and work hard...it's definitely a grind, but the ones who bust their ass, are tenacious and also intelligent are the ones at the front end of the bellcurve, transitioning into an AE role in 6-9 months.ย

Congrats and best of luck!

Hello MMMGood,

It was my pleasure to serve! You're right, the lifeskills (intuition, gut, sense) are things you can't learn on the sales floor or a program. I'll be sure to learn as much as I can because sales is always changing - there are always new approaches to different problems. We have to evolve, too.

Thank you and good luck to you, as well!

Follow the advice of your peers that have been there and your manager right off the bat. Save your unique ideas until you have some decent time under your belt.

Hello BillyHoyle,

Sound advice! I'll keep all my "outside the box" ideas in my pocket for when I have the freedom/capability to draw on my own. My manager is already helping me with the onboarding before I even onboard, so I'm sure he (and my fellow colleagues) will be invaluable resources!

First off, congrats!!! I would familiarize myself with the tech tools you'll be using.ย  A lot of them have their own "universities" where you'll have access to all their tutorials and how to videos.ย  They're always evolving and adding new features.ย  I still attend them to find out new tools to give me an edge.ย  This will save time for the person training you and show you're quick to learn, ready to prospect!

Hello looper1010,

Have already asked about the tech stack and fortunate enough to say I'm trained on all but 1-2 that are easy to learn. I don't know if they have a "university" just yet, but I do have a resource to go to for updated training, etc.

Thank you for the advice!

Of course, I'm here to learn from some of the best. Plus, you're in the NYC metro area - like me. Though I'm in NJ, it's always good to be nice to your neighbors.ย

You are already steps ahead of most SDRs as far as experience. Don't be afraid of people getting pissed or saying no. Those are easy calls to move on from. And as looper said make sure you get comfortable with all the tools asap.

Helllo Bittersweet0326,

Appreciate the advice, I'm tempered enough where stuff like that doesn't get to me. I'm going over the tech stack I'm not familiar with now.

Thank you!

Hello BeUnderstood,

I acknowledge your acknowledgement and acknowledge you back; thank you!

No matter what the ups and downs may bring, part of the reason I got this job was because of my personality, so I will do my best to be personable, professional, and intellectual.

Appreciate you!

Hello thegrinch,

Thank you! I'll be upbeat as possible and engage with my peers. If anything, I feel like I might be more experienced than some of them. I won't underestimate them, though, and will be sure to reach out to hit my goals.

Appreciate the feedback.

Donโ€™t try to reinvent the wheel. Ego like that just slows you down. My advice is find the absolute best BDR on the team and just be their shadow, do exactly what they do, and learn as much as you can. Work harder than everyone else until your skill level catches up.ย

After a while, it will all be second nature to you and you can put your own spin on everything and make it better. Also, be yourself.ย

Hello vidalSaaSoon,

You're right, it's one of the things I learned in my training: shadow the best rep on the team and learn from them. I will do my best to mimic the best-working practices and then incorporate my own spin - when I'm grown and ready.

Awesome advice and I appreciate the input!

Detach yourself from the outcome of deals and constantly fill your pipeline. Remaining calm and not getting to high or low will help a lot with the role

Congrats on the new role! My first actions as a new SDR was to meet with some of the top preforming SDR's and shadow them, or bounce ideas off of them. I also say, Always Be Curious, asking questions when you are new in a role is extremely important and will shorten the time it takes for you to become a quota crusher and teaching the next round of SDR's that come in!ย
