I need help negotiating an offer after fucking up the initial negotiation

Hey guys,

SDR, got a job offer at a great company last week. My new potential manager completely caught me off guard with the offer - I wasn't expecting to hear back for at least another week, I thought he didn't think I was a good fit, and he shocked me by saying I was the best outside interview he had ever had. I just got offered a promotion to ISR and more money at my current job, so I didn't accept the offer right away.

On the phone I let him know that I was talking to someone else. He asked who. My knee-jerk reaction was to lie and say a competitor - I was trying to avoid discussing my current employer because I didn't want to go down a rabbit hole of shit-talking them.

Immediately he got into money talk. I was trying to avoid it and just said they were offering something similar because money wasn't really the deciding factor for me.

Now I want to accept their offer tomorrow, but of course push back to try & get more $ because why the hell not. Feeling like kind of an idiot for not being prepared to negotiate when he called me last week.

Any tactical advice on how to ask for more money after brushing money off last week and saying it wasn't the deciding factor?

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
1. First off, you're being too hard on yourself. This can happen very easily.
2. How big is the gap between what you want and what the offer is?

Thank you for the feedback! Thereโ€™s a $2500 gap in base pay from what my company is offering but thinking of pushing for $5k to see what they come back with. I have a feeling theyโ€™ll come back with more equity, either is fine Iโ€™m happy with their offer

Yeah, I would just ask for the $5k and see what they say. That's not so big of a gap.

Money doesn't have to be a deciding factor for you to ask for more. I wouldn't worry about it too much. You're clearly in a strong position here.ย

Another thing to remember is that your request for money isn't going to offend the hiring manager. If you're his/her #1 then their goal is to get you on the team. Asking for more won't offend them. In fact, for sales roles in general, I always expect reps to ask for more. it's a sales gig after all.ย

My advice - be open & honest about it if you're certain you want to take the role. Explain you're happy with the offer, but you want to try and match what your current role / another offer is putting on the table. Leave the number with the hiring manager and see what he/she comes back with. Again, trust the leverage that being a #1 pick gets you.ย

Money is always a key factor but shouldnโ€™t be the decision maker
