Networking: How do you ask for someone's time?

I usually send an email asking for an informational interview, saying something like: "Hey ____, saw you are doing XYZ, and I'm trying to learn more about X. I know you are very busy but do you have time for a 20-min chat to talk about X."

Got someone on LI that started talking with me about our school, and then after a few exchanges, that person asked to get on a call to talk about sales. And it got me wondering about how people ask for other people's time, hence this post.

The best is to give someone a reason to speak with you and flattering them. Get rid of I know your busy because itโ€™s a tired line. โ€œHey X I wanted to speak with you because of x reason and seems like youโ€™d be a great person to speak with on the topic. Are you open to helping a novice with some expert advice?โ€

Oh interesting, I legit added that "I know you are busy" because one of my old business professors told me that it's good to acknowledge someone's busy. I do prefer this flattering aspect instead, thanks for the advice!

Busy is a bs excuse, if they were busy they wouldnโ€™t be able to answer the phone.ย

People love to help other people. Just plainly ask them for help or advice concerning a subject they love is an easy in.

If they were recently published in a magazine or something, use that.

Yep I do that as well. Always good to mention something theyโ€™ve done.

When you have your LinkedIn account set to "open to work" and recruiters reach out all the time do you take the mindset of "I need to sell myself for this role" OR "The recruiter needs to sell the role to myself?"
