New company name

I’m starting a new business with a partner, we are buying scarfs from a indigenous group at the verge of extinction. They make these for their community to protect themselves from the harsh conditions, but recently have gotten some attention from tourists and are now starting to sell outside their group.

The idea behind this business is to raise awareness of their harsh living conditions and expose the delicate situation they are in through a go fund me campaign, as well as giving back to the community with every scarf sold.

We had originally named the company “Nopán” which means textile in their language, but my partner thought “Nopy” would sound “cuter” and might be more appealing to consumers. Also, the “á” doesn't exist in English and other languages, which can be confusing but again it could also be a differential characteristic in a globalization market, while conserving the original word while promoting the ethnic group.

What do you warriors think? Which of the options below you like the best and why? The reason behind your choice would be very appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Making it "cute" contradicts your goal of bringing awareness to a harsh situation. If the goal is to truly highlight the indigenous group, why shy away from their culture?  You are highlighting "confusion" - that is the point.

Yeah, I agree with you there, it does pose a conflict with our company's vision and mission as well.

I think you should stick with Nopán, since it captures the essence of the indigenous group you are trying to promote, the other option seem to globalize it, which is not what you would like in these kinds of social movements.

I like this point a lot, we are trying to promote and keep their essence, they are a group who doesn’t even speak their language in front of strangers and are starting to forget

Love the concept and the idea behind it, my friend. When you guys are ready let me know, I'd love to have one of those scarfs!

Love the idea of Nopan, however with the a not existing in multiple languages, I lean towards Nopi for the best name, due to simplicity and due to it being more appealing (to me at least) with the I instead of Y.

I would stick with Nopán as well for the reasons @AlphaCharlie mentioned and so as not to potentially offend them once they learn of the good you're doing.  There are plenty of companies that use the appropriate character in their branding but not for website name, etc.

I voted before reading the post, and I said Nopán because it sounded like there was some cultural meaning to it. After reading your post, I was right. Furthermore, your goal is to bring awareness, so you should definitely stick with  Nopán, people will be curious to know what that means.

I would drop the accent aigu. Most don't have it on keyboards and your brand will drift toward it being dropped organically.

I like Nopán, but what’s the main reason you would go for any of the others”
Kinonez

Well, Nopan doesn’t have the characteristic  á, that most languages don't have, and the others are a easier to globalize in my opinion, that being said, they don't project the essence of the culture we are trying to expose.

So I foolishly voted before reading the full story (still trying to figure out this site's interface, I'm new lol) and following 'modern/conventional' naming practices I gravitated towards Nopi but with that context given, not to mention some people's illuminating responses, I think Nopán is perfect.

I prefer Nopán for many of the same reasons already stated. And personally I still think Nopán is kind of cute. I think it's also attractive to the Western culture because it makes it even more foreign and authentic and westerners eat that shit up!
