New headcount, same target

I am doing sales for a specific territory and they are looking for a new headcount. What this means for me is losing 1/3 of my existing customers and also having to compete with one more person for new customers.

The worst part is that my target is staying exactly the same. Right now I am barely achieving. It’s not impossible but there is a big chance even today with one less headcount that I won’t make it.

My company says this growth is good but, for me, it just means performing less and making less money as achieving target is going to be more difficult. On top of that we are getting no extra resources to help cover the gap (ie, BDRs, extra marketing, etc.)

Is this normal?

I think it's time to start applying to other places. Oftentimes when a company gets a new round of funding they just throw bodies at the S.D.R position which is not always the best way to go about creating new business. Quality > Quantity

I don't agree. This is just so typical that finding a company that DOESN'T do this is a real challenge. I've had my quota double in 2 years while territory size significantly dropped.

I'd start looking elsewhere. There are so many sales positions open that I'm sure you could find something else quickly

Ugh, I've gone through this too. Its the worst. I stuck it out, the company failed and realized that they weren't making any more money with more people in seat and then we went through a layoff. Things are better now so glad I stuck it out but it was a 2 year process....so depends on how much you like this company and product

Typical bullshit. There is even a saying about this "Quotas go up, territories go down." I've seen and experienced a lot worse. The other thing you need to consider is that basically all of the other companies are doing this as well. So even if you come in new, the same bullshit is likely happening. If you can find a place that doesn't do that, let me know.
