New Sales Manager said coaching was “not a good use of her time”

Hi savages, my first post :) curious for any input-
I asked my manager's new boss if I could could schedule time with her for 15 minutes to help sort through CRM (mind you, she & her husband are both certified in this CRM). Genuinely excited to finally get some guidance & was given the response of "I don't see how that would be a good use of my time".

**Sidenote: I did go to my direct manager, & he lead me to her as a resource.

Thoughts?

Sounds like you need to talk to your direct manager and ask for their help.

Yep, I'd go back to your manager, let him/her know what happened, and ask for help directly, as the skip level manager is not going to be the resource that you both hoped she would be.

Respect the chain of command, but coaching shouldn't be a waste of time. Though it might be the best use of this person's time.

Why not just ask your manager?

any manager who says working with her team on something they ask for help on "is not a good use of their time" is a garbage manager and doesn't deserve to be in the position they are in. That is the number 1 job of a manager - to support their team however they may need it

Blow it up
Go back to your direct manager and tell him what she said and that you strongly feel that guidance would improve your results.

Get it on record so you have leverage should any unfortunate things like a PIP happen in the near future.

She’s not a VP, just a new Business manager, who oversees my manager.

She advised she wanted to be a additional “coach” or resource.

Ok coach, I need help with SF
Coach: “I don’t see how that would be a good use of my time.”

To be fair, she probably sees coaching as strategic, not tactical. Learning the ins and outs of the CRM is tactical. Can you ask a colleague to walk you through it?

This by no means excuses her from the response she gave you, which was rude, by the way.

Did you come to them with specific asks?

Salesforce is very well documented (officially and un-officially) on youtube.

Fuck that, hopefully she meant to not a good use for today but tomorrow works. Sorry about that

She meant in general - before I could ask anything further she hung up on me which I was really confused?

You need to be mindful of the chain of command. This wouldn't fall into your manager's boss's scope of work. Utilize your resources strategically and always ask a colleague before going up the chain of command.

Just tell her - It is the best use of your time. Imagine the time you will save if you train me better on SFDC than if you didnt and have to reach out for changes to be made. That will quickly add up to more than 15 minutes.

As someone with 10+ years in first & second line sales management I would be very happy to spend time with one of the AEs in my org who took the time to ask. As leaders we are here to serve the people down the line period IMHO (ok and a bit of time managing up and across). It is about doing everything we can to help THEM make money as that is our only path to earning. I'm not being critical of this particular person but it wouldnt be my approach and I might prefer a different culture.

Well the petty thing would be next time she asks you to do something, give her that same answer back 😂😂
But ok… seriously though, I feel like any manager should always be willing to help those under them because it’s also just going to help the company too and make you more efficient. If they don’t have the time right then, ok refer someone else, reserve time out, or send you some training courses on it.

My manager is not certified in this CRM, hence why he led me to his new manager 😭

You talking about Salesforce? What are you trying to do?

If you're going to a VP asking for an overview of CRM I can understand why they'd shoot you down.

Coaching is part of their job (usually). Shouldn't they want you to succeed? Often they are manager because they have more experience.
