On the road again..

With things opening up again across the country, us sales savages will be back on the road soon. It’s been quite awhile since I was onsite, had a customer lunch, etc. (I am also newer to the field).

How do you run a sales meeting in person? Mainly thinking of lunches or out of office activities. When to bring up work, when to shoot the shit and so on...

would love to hear suggestions, helpful books, strategies, etc..

Guess it depends on how long you have, are you in a restaurant or did you bring lunch to them in the office? I normally reserve 10-15 minutes for pleasantries if meeting in a restaurant (assuming 1 hour meeting) but I feel it out. Some prospects just want to get down to business immediately, I let them dictate the flow to an extent.

Restaurant meetings are way less formal as well, so while we talk "business", it is a good time to dig into their personal motivations, not necessarily press on business topics.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Also, if you're a drinker/they're drinkers, always great to schedule a happy hour after the meeting to loosen people up a bit. Bring lunch to the meeting and have the drinks afterward if that math works for you.

Great points! I normally let customers control the flow on Zoom (normally 2 minutes of BS then straight to business) so that makes sense to transfer to real life

You can also ask for expectations/agenda via email beforehand so you have an idea of what they're looking for going into the lunch

I don't know your situation but it makes sense to keep it close to the vest beyond what you've provided. My guess is 70/30 you're probably fine and there really isn't rush to get out.
