One Man Army Role

For some startups going from 50 employees to a 200+ HC may be the requiem of an announced death. The company I was working with was no exception to this curse and once we landed the 7M USD magic number things started to turn into a twisted manner in which our Csuite decided to invite over the wolves to the barn.

Long story short - upper management brought a consultant wanna-be, that got the CRO role and took over the company reducing the HC by 55% in 6 weeks merging all depts in one - under the premise of Revenue per Head. Which automatically made him a one-man army with 6-7 roles, including head of HR, Recruitment, Operations, Lead Gen, Planning, PR, and CRO... earned the badge of Dicktator.

If you were the CEO of this company, what would you do?

You left this company, right? I think you told us that earlier today in another post.

If I'm the CEO I approved of this action. If the company is making numbers and succeeding then why do I, as the board-reporting figurehead, give a rats ass if you are pissing off employees? Find more when the current ones leave.

Wasting energy on this is like pouring water into a bottomless bucket and wondering why it's not filling up. You've got a snowball's chance in hell of affecting any change in this situation.

You already left the company so why are you still investing energy here? @poweredbycaffeine summed it up nicely for you. This doesn't happen without the approval of the CEO. Assuming numbers look good, and i'm the CEO, I see no reason to change anything.

Such a huge downsize in such a short period or time is not normal. Seems like he wants to make changes just to say changes where made. If I was the CEO I’d ask why such sudden reduction if it makes no sense, I’d ask him to leave.

The CEO had to approve of these actions...don't pretend like he/she didn't know.

at this point is uncertain if the CEO knows - considering  he just gave the keys and let him drive

I wouldn't have hired a "consultant" in the first place.  At most, maybe a fractional CRO until I found my permanent choice.

As a startup going to 200+ employees, I'd personally look for a VP of Sales looking for their first CRO role.

less money out of my pocket, and more opportunity to get someone hungry to prove themself.

Sounds like they’re slimming for acquisition, to be honest. Especially as they brought in a consultant who might be on contract.

I'm not quite knowledgeable about M&A - care elaborating more? the picture I have atm is that the company separated into two different tiny companies to "keep the brand safe"

Hi! I’m not super knowledgeable about all the details, but generally a few the things that a potential buyer might look at would be headcount and salaries.

What was your first sales role that made you realize you were born to do this? Mine was girl scouts and moving way more cookies than the rest of my fellow brownies
