One more update about my micromanaging workplace

I just got off the phone with the person who gave me the job offer originally.

  • "Listen, Kirby, I think it was clear that of all the people we recently onboarded, you had the most potential to really do well."
  • "You report directly to me, and I don't even have a login to be able to see the key strokes or anything like that."
  • "It's not an issue of a lack of trust, it's just an issue of management."
  • "I think there was a miscommunication here. We really only use that during the first few months to make sure our remote workers are really present. I don't think we even use it down the road."
  • "I really feel like if you had come straight to me, we could have seen eye to eye."

I told him that I needed to trust my initial instinct: that a place that would lead with such a heavy hand of monitoring isn't a place I could trust to invest so much time and energy into long term.

However, on the inside, because I'm a spineless piece of shit, there was a part of me that SO BADLY wanted to give it another shot or negotiate it.

It's just really hard to let go, because this job had a higher earning potential than anywhere I'd ever worked, and the new job I got isn't as good honestly. But they treat me like a human being at least.

PLEASE TELL ME I'M NOT STUPID FOR QUITTING

Man this is like an abusive relationship. One party exerts power in a harmful way, the other knows its wrong and tries to leave, the toxic party grovels to get you back. It'' stay in that awful cycle until you leave. Good on you for getting out, its absolutely the right call

Oh man, I can totally relate to this. I left a toxic/micromanagement company, and legit almost considered staying when my bosses tried to make me stay. I donโ€™t know if itโ€™s a psychological thing to doubt ourselves when making such decisions. But Iโ€™m telling you, you did the right thing, donโ€™t second-guess it.

Most people quit in the first few months. You're in sales. If you can't make a check, you're gone.

I would still not work for this company. They're trying to sell you. Also, edit your post and scrub your name. Don't dox yourself.

My name isn't Kirby, that's just a random video game character name I picked for myself :)

*Frantically rereads to make sure I didn't include my real name anywhere*

Man, stay strong. Your gut is right, that level of control is neither cool nor needed. Their perspective on this is fucked up. You did well in leaving that job.

Exactly why I don't think this "TransparentBusiness" company that's advertising everywhere is going to do very well. You can't build your tool and in essence your product around enabling micromanagement. They might do really well for a while but eventually reps will avoid companies that use them and companies will stop using them.ย

LISTEN TO ELSA (I've never actually seen Frozen so I hope that makes sense).

Seriously, you dodged a bullet and I applaud you for recognizing the mess it was and pulling the rip cord.

The sick joke of sales... hope. You need to believe to succeed, but believing is also how you continue to fail.

But you were right and my guess is that level of management also meant earning potential was bullshit.

Just got promoted to team lead and my manager is asking me to motivate the team to hit their KPI's. Any tips on this since no one likes the KPI chat, including me.
