Organizational changes - should I take a new role that isn't clearly defined

Looking for some advice here really. We're changing up our sales structure and I like the vision long term, but will potentially be the first person to slide into a new role. I fully understand that I'm going to be viewed as essentially a case study, but am wondering how I can negotiate myself into a stronger position and make sure my success metrics are attainable.

Has anyone else done something similar?

If it excites you and youโ€™re willing to risk failure, I say do it.ย

Iโ€™ve had a few opportunities like that in my career and every single time Iโ€™ve taken it Iโ€™ve been glad I did.ย

As for negotiating, see if theyโ€™d be open to a minimum payout for you. Maybe 70% your OTE regardless of quota attainment or something.ย

Youโ€™re being given the opportunity to be an explorer and try something new. Does that make you excited or terrified? Let that be your answer.ย

Fuck yeah, go for it. Even if you fail, you have a good story to tell.ย

@salesnerdย Good point! It's a lot of change at once so I'm mainly looking for things I can do before accepting it to put myself in a better position to succeed. If it works out, then this could really be a great move for me

Make sure you do your homework around how theyโ€™re going to help ensure youโ€™re successful. If they canโ€™t, donโ€™t do it. Iโ€™ve found execs often change up things without putting safeguards in place for the actual IC.

Absolutely not. A co-worker of mine had an experience similar to this and is why he now works with me. Once they accepted the position things started out smoothly, but he soon found himself doing tasks that were not even mentioned when discussing the new role with management. In personal experience as well, when roles aren't defined you can turn into a one size fits all and will get work that you had no intention of signing up for.ย

Thanks for the inputย  @Grant_Horunย To add some more clarity, we have a "full cycle" sale. Sales reps prospect, close, and manage accounts long term and our commission is based along how much that account bills each month.ย  We're more alligned with BDM's currently. They're looking to break down into SDR, AE, and AM as we keep growing. I'd be moving into an AE position.
