OTE’s negotiation gone wrong

I applied for a job, went over all the 5 steps process and finally got an offer.
The same day I replied to the offer mentioning how excited I was receive the offer and that I would do my best to reach the quota/milestone.
I asked (and not pretended) to increase the OTE by 7% as the milestone to reach sounded to me very challenging and if it would be ok to leave 2/3 days a week for 30 minutes to pick up my children from school.

Now the red flag of the whole thing🚩:
my potential boss replied in a rude way saying that we already discussed salary during the interview process and that I either accept it or he would withdraw the offer
+
that I could only go once a week to pick up my children from school.

We indeed discussed salary but not commited 100%, even because it was not an official offer. And what's so strange in negotiating OTE for a Sales role? Is it really acceptable nowadays being so strict about employees personal needs?

Now I see two options:

1) Politely say that they can indeed take back the offer so they can stick whenever they like the most
2) Accept to work with this person and this culture

(I do have a job already so I'm not in a disperate need to have a new job)

I'd be telling them to stick their offer up their ass.

That won't be necessary. I would like to formally rescind my interest in the position. I can see now that this won't be a great cultural fit for me.

You accept that offer and you will regret every day of every week of every month you work there.

saying no to both requests wouldn't be that bad. How they choose to approach the no is what makes the difference. If they respond rudely at this stage, imagine how they'll respond once you work for them.

Treating you poorly during the interview/offer process is like going on a first date that they treat you like shit on. It probably isn't going to get better from there.

Was the way they phrased the no rude, or do you feel like them telling you no was rude?

They phrased it rudely. No doubts about it.

I agree that their “no” could have been phrased differently. And that OTE couldn’t go higher on what they offer initially.

I personally don’t agree that saying “no” to both isn’t that bad.

I mean if they aren't willing to do both or either, then they aren't willing to. Not every company you interview at will have the same values as you or see the same things as a simple request. This manager for example could have nothing to do with his kids and like it that way, so in his mind asking to leave early regularly to get them is a ridiculous request.

That's why there's more than one company to work for out there. That's why there's more than one manager in the world. It gives us the freedom to work for people that have similar values as you and allow you flexibility in those area's.

With all that being said, him being rude in his response is definitely unwarranted and unprofessional.

I agree.

I’ll add: if you go over 5 steps-process you have the chance to “taste” the culture. There were no red flags during the process.
That answer came out of nowhere and now I’m glad it came.

It’s a negotiation, not a dick. He shouldn’t take it so hard.

Walk away. If he talks that way to a candidate, just wait till you’re an employee.

That’s what I’m mostly worried about. I also wonder on his ability to negotiate with clients with this “take it or leave it” approach

Yeah, you are seeing the best he has to offer right now. It’s not going to get better.

A take it or leave it approach isn't even a bad thing. He could have simply told you that he couldn't honor your request. The take it or leave it would be implied. The dick move was in him calling it out and saying that the offer would be rescinded.

It's not really a negotiation unless you are willing to draw a line and walk away, is it?

What a great start for this relationship. Do not work for such an ass. If he would have been polite and explained his stance, maybe. But now, nope

I’d probably say something along the lines, with their boss BCC’d that it’s not a good cultural fit as my childrens’ needs are more important than the company’s and something along the lines that 7% is inline with inflation and something along the lines of the manager being a fuck ass.

If this is the best they have to offer during the recruiting phase, what do you think the first tough quarter is going to look like...

The best time to find a new job is when you already have a job. It gives you the upper hand in negotiating. If that is how the boss treats a potential employee, imagine how he’ll treat you once you’re there. I’d send an email (and copy as many people in that company as you feel comfortable with) that you respectfully decline and why.

There were already an Hr person and a VP of another dpt in the loop and when he replied he added the CEO, which tells a lot about the culture

Your boss/ company doesn’t value your family commitments. While this is definitely old school and not too far off a normal job… I would agree with most posts here and don’t take that job.
