"Other candidates have more experience, why should we hire you?"

Hello Everyone,

I am actively looking for a position of SDR in a tech company and I am curious how should I overcome the above objection if I've got no experience?

Is there any savage way? Simple way is also accepted!

What makes you a good candidate?

Overcoming objections is a big part of the job.

Gotta find your unique, defensible differentiator(s) and sell them.

Your inexperience can be an asset. “I’m coming into this role fresh and ready to learn how company XYZ does things. I’ll be able to absorb your processes and not default to how I’ve done it other places.”

That can be powerful to a hiring manager. It reminds me of Anthony Bourdains book and why he hired inexperienced souls chefs and it was because they did everything exactly how he told them rather than try to things their own ways. At a base level it can be good.

I'd give 'em the control by saying this:

𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘸𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘧𝘦𝘳? 𝘌𝘹𝘵𝘳𝘦𝘮𝘦 𝘖𝘸𝘯𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘩𝘪𝘱 𝘰𝘳 𝘗𝘳𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘣𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺-𝘖𝘧-𝘙𝘦𝘴𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘴-𝘍𝘳𝘰𝘮-𝘠𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘴-𝘖𝘧-𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘳𝘦𝘪𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦?

I would have 1 - 2 solid stories about how you were able to be creative to solve a problem, being detail oriented lead to a success, and how your were able to solve a problem no one else was able to solve.

those types of skills seem to be what lots of SDR managers look for. If you dont have specific sales stories, pull from other experiences and then connect the dots about how that will help you in sales.

If you have to ask how to overcome this objection, the person asking the question has everything they need to know.

Ask this question early on in the process: what separates the average from the above average in this role? If they say anything along the lines of "grit, worth ethic, coachability, resilience, dedication etc then make a mental note of it.

Later, when they ask "other candidates have more exp, why should we hire you" reference their answer back to them- "you said that top performers are top performers because they have drive and willpower- I have those things and that is why you should hire me as opposed to somebody with more exp"

Hiring managers also know that somebody applying for an SDR role who has already been an SDR somewhere else has a story behind them. They will ask that person: if you didn't succeed as an SDR and get promoted at your last company, then why will you succeed here?" I think this is a way tougher question to answer. Hope that helps and good luck!!!

That's really great way to answer that @WholesomeGuy95but let's say hiring manager says "they all (other candidates) say the same thing!"

What do you think my response should be?

You could ask in return “other companies pay more, why should I consider you guys?”

Jokes aside, you could say “I bring more to the table besides just years of experience. I bring fresh perspective not jaded by bad habits, the drive I developed pursuing <whatever>, and a willingness to learn from good sale leadership”.

Don't be savage, be technical. Think longterm. Always think about what is in it for them rather than you (this goes for sales in general).

Do your research on the company and bring it up with why it aligns with your personal plans and journey. Where do you want to be in 2-5 years and how are you going to get there?

Simply put, align with their goals and then put in the work to show them you weren't lying.

You can say how your comparative experience means you don't have any long-standing bad habits or preconceived notions. You have fewer blindspots, a fresher perspective and new ideas

If number of years alone guarantee quality of work, all companies would have been hiring old folks today, the young ones would have been out of job.
With a clean slate / fresh approach, one can be more malleable, more creative and really curious to learn and get things done - than just sticking to the old ways.
