Outbound email tip of the week: Why you, why you now.

Happy Monday, fellow savages! I find that I've been contributing to more of the off-topic posts lately rather than trying to share something of value with the community. Having said that, let's start the week off with a tip that may open up more doors for you this week in your outbounding.

In 2011 I was lucky enough to go through a 'Why you, why you now' training with John Barrows (before he became the JB we all know today). It completely changed the way I prospected as a BDR because it created immediate relevance and showed that I had something to give to the prospect. Email open rates went up, booking rates increased, and my AEs were getting more qualified deals. Here's how you can try it this week in your outbound emails:

Why you: Why are you reaching out to that particular prospect? Were they mentioned in an article? Did their company just raise money? Are they your ICP at a target account? Start the email off with a line that explains why you are reaching out to them specifically.

Why you now: Why are you reaching out to them today? Does your product solve for the pain of scaling up a company that just took on funding? Is your tool designed to help CTOs at eCommerce companies? Have you had success with one of their competitors? In the second half of your email, you detail why they are getting this message at this very moment.

Maybe you've already been doing this, but if you haven't, it might be worth a shot with 10 of your targets this week. In any case, if you found this helpful feel free to drop a comment or give me an upvote!

Example email to try out (keep in mind, I don't sell this service...):

Hi @sahil,

Congratulations on launching the Bravado app! I know the community has been long anticipating this release--we're all psyched and you're killing it! The reason I'm reaching out is that I work with companies like Bravado that are launching new features nearly daily, but find that it's difficult to keep track of release notes and other important moments in their dev cycles. How is your engineering team coping with the speed?

When could we connect for 15 minutes this week to see if we can help you keep up the pace with fewer headaches?

Thanks,

PBC

I decided to start being a force for help and not a force for snark...takes way less energy.

I kinda liked the force for snark though. We need both! Do you mind if I add that email to the google doc?

I can do both by spending the energy wisely! Add away...but what doc are we referring to?

Anytime there is a good email template that gets posted, I aggregate them here:

<removed post>

That way if someone new actually uses the search bar - all the good emails that have ever been posted in here are easy to find in one spot!

More room for improvement and they are actively looking to be coached? (At least the good ones are 😊)

Exactly! I've been coaching youth sports since I was 16, so implementing/improving new skills is my favorite part of developing athletes/reps.

Glad I could help--definitely mix it in and try to get some data on WYWYN style emails vs what you've been doing. If it shows a favorable result then you know it's the right messaging style for you.

this is awesome! I have been using this for a while, but it is a good reminder. I touch so many new leads daily, that it can be hard to personalize each touch like this. However,  I could do it more! Thank you!

First, thank you for this post! Secondly, I’ve heard about JB sales a lot recently, do you think it’s worth paying for it?

I am not sure what the going rate is, but I think it is worth asking leadership to invest in a workshop. PS, does your username have anyting to do with the show Money Heist?

Any advice on subject line?

for example, is "Congrats on the Fundraise" too general or need to tie it back to your product category in some way?

I prefer to keep it brief, and I need to use the word ‘your’. This might get “Your app launch.”
