Outbound sales lost me my job

I worked for this company for 4 years trying for cold outreach, finding professionals, and essentially accumulating data., and I felt like all my time was being wasted in research itself. Like I know there are tools that exist in the market to help me get data automate this journey but it does not work when you're targeting SMBs and E-commerce. It's just so tough.


Now that I'm fired I just want to make a solution for this problem and put a tool out there that helps people like me. I'm not sure how many people faced this same problem, do you think I just take a gap for 1 year, live off my savings and get some CS guys to build me this product. Or should I just get back into the job market.


I'm done with sales either way. Like I hate it but I need to get my bread up and like I now know where to gather relevant information for the niche I'm targeting so I'm confident I can build this tool.

Do you have the abilities and skillset to make this a proper undertaking? If you have any doubt, then don't do it.

If you do decide to do it, I'd still be looking for stable income. Savings can run out REAL fast.

I found few people interested in partnering up to build up a lead generation tool. We're thinking of making it like Yelp for E-commerce and SMBs, list attributes they can play off of. Potentially being able to buy data after freemium data summary. It's hard to find a reliable source of emails however. I'm not sure if I can monetize a tool that does not end with a reliable decision maker contact. I need help with people data in the E-commerce and SMB space.
But yea, not sure if its worth taking a year long gap. There's good potential tho.

Hate to shit in your cereal but it's a widely known fact that lead gen without revenue acquisition is a doomed model. Everyone I've seen utilize either an agency or a SaaS vendor for this ultimately cuts their ties from them because meetings don't make money.

Itโ€™s not a gap year. Itโ€™s many years until you are either a) making enough profit to pay yourself or b) take on funding and dilute your ownership.

Itโ€™s great that you think that way, honestly!!

But only do this if you do not have many financial obligations!
Find something stable, build this on the side, once you see some light, follow this path.

For now, it may be coming from just anger or disappointment. Take sometime, think about it, talk to some people about this space. I know Similarweb is a great tool to help you find SMBs and E-commerce, not sure what exactly is the gap.

If youโ€™ve done SMB, why no Mid Market or Ent?

Try changing lanes a little but donโ€™t flip your life all together. Unless youโ€™re 1000% sure, that this is something you want to do.

Similarweb is expensive for datapoints that I don't even find relevant. I want insights into a business's social presence, PR journey, third-party reviews, and other factors that give a comprehensive view of its online presence and customer base. Similarweb is overkill and focuses on aspects that I don't consider important.

That's what I think the gap is. Give me your opinion though if this is something that I might be wrong about I don't want to waste a year on this.

I did this for 3 years at the start of my career working for a tech start up, day in day out outbound focusing on SMBs and ecommerce. Ended in redundancy. I felt the same, whilst bringing in business I was essentially just making that company a HUGE database from scratch. Taught me a lot but not essential skills when it comes to actual sales.

I'd say if you are going to make one, it needs to be incredible. Purely because there are so many tools out there and I guarantee lots of people are of similar mind to you!

However, if you don't try you won't know, could be the money maker!
