Outside sales reps: Does your company require you to come into an office each morning / night? If not, what schedule do you currently have?

I lead multiple sales teams and want to give more flexibility and less required in office time. Currently they are required to be in every morning and evening, but I'd like to see what other companies are doing. I have the old school fear of losing team culture but need to get with the times on remote flex.

Why in the evening? Every day in general seems like overkill, and not the type of freedom I'd want as an outside rep.

when you say night, what time are we talking about here? This seems a little to micro managment-y for me. what is the reason to come back to the office?

also when you refer to outside sales, do you mean most reps are driving around town knocking on doors running in person meetings?

Yes - driving around knocking on doors and running meetings throughout the day. Fairly short sale cycles for 70% of the job. Other 30% can take much longer for $500k+ sales. These are also 21-25 yr olds predominantly.

why do they need to come back at the end of the day?

If you wanted to have a more attractive hybrid schedule, i would have everyone come in Monday wednesday and friday morning. thats it.

They sold our office building. No coming back from that now. :D

All remote, all the time. I'm grown. I don't need to physically sit in an office for someone to watch me. Either I'm selling or not.

If I were an outside rep who had to go into an office every day to "check in" and "build culture" I'd find a new job ASAP.

What culture are you building other than one of micromanagement and mistrust?

Fair - remember too, I am trying to change the rules and want to see what else is out there so I can build around that. My specialty is no experience right out of school so they do need bumper rails in the beginning but over time this is what they get into sales for. So trying to create just that!

Good to know they're younger and greener. Face time can help at that phase, but don't over do it.

What kind of outside sales are you talking about?

I'm in tech sales, have been remote for 10+ years, and don't have to ever go into an office.

This is a good thing, as our HQ is across the country from me.

Most outside reps are remote for the most part, but they typically travel a lot across the country

Culture has nothing to do with meeting at a random physical location. If they want to come fine, if they don’t, fine. Set meaningful goals for them and let them lose. Of they make their goals what do you care how they do it? If they don’t, get rid of them. Forcing them to come to the office won’t make any difference.

My outside reps at my last company were basically inside reps. they rarely left hahah. I always made fun of them as a BDR

I am in the office once a quarter. Usually for QBR. Otherwise I’m at clients, shows, or working from home.

Why would they. You need to be at the customers

Are you in the copier industry? This smells very strongly like it. My first role out of college was copier sales and we had to come in every AM and return to the office every day before 5. Crazy to think about it now

I put into affect morning and evening floater meetings. Meaning that every morning from 8:oo till 8:30 there is coffee and danish and everyday from 5:oo to 5:30 there are refreshments. Each member is required to show up for the Monday morning and the Thursday evening meetings, the rest are optional. If they don't come in for either meeting in a day, I expect a touch base call each day. Each floater meeting has about a 50% attendance, morale is up and sales are up.
