Overcoming "I'm not the decision maker" objection

Run into this all the time. It's either "this is not what I do in my org" or "we do this but I'm not the decision maker".

What are some ways to overcome this objection and convince them to take the meeting?

That's fine, this call is not to make decisions, drop some value of your solution and ask an open-ended question that involves their day-to-day life. This is where your research comes into play and know at least some general pains about your prospect.

Good idea. I usually try to do as much discovery as I can on these calls but they all seem reluctant if it's not their decision to make. Maybe I need a better rapport building strategy

The most important thing is to try to understand their world. Let them talk, listen for cues where your solution can be plugged in.

Is that an objection as much as it’s a fact? You could always look at their LinkedIn profile to figure if they’re the DM or no. I figure very few times when people say this, they’re just shooing me away.
But I’d follow that up with, “Ah, i see that you handle Enablement over there and assumed you’d be at the helm of this. But would it be ridiculous if I asked you to point me in the right direction?”

I think a better way to frame this is how to convince them to refer the right person. I have asked a variations of "point me to the right direction" but usually they were hesitant to do so...

Show value, ask if there are any solutions you can help with and if it's above their decision making abilities, ask...

why would you want a meeting with someone that’s not a decision maker???

True. But more often than not they're just deflecting. Also, we have seen giving out demo to end-user might increase the chance they become our internal champion and influence decision maker for us.
