Painkiller on Netflix ๐Ÿ’Š

I just finished watching Painkiller docuseries on Netflix. The docuseries is about Oxycontin, I think being in sales so many things were super creepy.

They hired young, pretty women straight out of college to sell the productย
We see how they make insane amounts of commission. And it's luxury houses and nice bags and penthouses. Commission was based on the doctors upping the dosage
They used extremely aggressive tactics and the objection handling was based on lies and freebies and wining and dining with the doctors
Sales messaging was genius. Just helping people in pain. Low risk of addiction. Based on nothing truthful.
Impact on reputation and society. What happened to all the people and their families and then of course the downfall of the companyย

Pretty crazy because I am not sure if my company always uses objection handling that is based on facts but nothing like this...

Have you watched it? How important is ethics to you?

Sorry if this has been brought up before my search bar wasn't working on the app

I had to stop watching because the oxy epidemic fucked up where Iโ€™m from and itโ€™s never recovered.

Same. Weโ€™re still recovering and itโ€™s taken more friends and loved ones than I care to count. Fuck that family forever.

As someone who was a ton of drug addiction (Oxy in particular) issues in their family, this was too difficult for me to get through.

Haven't seen it but just added it to my list.

I think ethics are very important. There are always some areas of grey, but it's usually pretty damn clear when things cross that line.

Personally, I've given up inbound leads from tobacco companies to other people, as well as at least one other kind of organization I just didn't work with. Cannabis and booze are no problem to me, but I just can't get behind the tobacco companies.

Yeah I think itโ€™s important to tell people what sales is and where it can get you in life but also at the same time conversation on ethics and clean business and all that. Yeah I canโ€™t support tobacco or even vaping companies

Itโ€™s such a good watch but itโ€™s really really heart wrenching.

Youโ€™re literally watching the creation of a systemic problem that will take us a generation to repair.

First it was the pills. Then it was the heroin. Now itโ€™s the fentanyl. In 5-10 years itโ€™ll be something else. All because of that piece of shit family.

It was very challenging to watch; extremely heartbreaking.

The ethics are despicable. Not for me, thatโ€™s for sure. Definitely some evil genius at play. Think of how much better off weโ€™d be if people werenโ€™t driven by greed. All that brainpower wasted on venality.

Yeah greed sucks and it was a horrible documentary to watch. Half a million people dead if not more is just unfathomable. More people should care about giving back and knowing when they have too much

Ethics are everything. I know a lot of salespeople who can sell something knowing it is a bad product or misleading its capabilities. I was raised on the mantra: "If you see your customers in the grocery store, you should have no reason to hide from them."

Yeah a good one. We have a big portfolio so I stay well clear of some products and few times said they have issuesโ€ฆ I really like the grocery store example

Check out Dopesick on Hulu. It came out a few years back, and I thought the story was a little better. It is told from a few perspectives.

After working in an unethical industry and having seen what the product I was selling would do to people ethics have become very important to me. To the point that I will leave a job at the drop of a hat if they begin acting in a less than ethical way. I'm an animal that will do damn near anything to make a dollar selling, but I won't intentionally hurt people or businesses.
