Paternity Leave

I have paternity leave coming up. We get 12 weeks paid, with no issues. The problem of course is that 12 weeks off of selling hurts the bottom line quite a bit. Not missing a paycheck is nice, but missing a quarter of closing and building will crush me.

If/When you have had paternity leave, how much have you taken?

You have your whole career to chase deals. Family is more important than commission- Enjoy the time with your new child. Oh and congratulations!

Thanks! I agree on chasing the deals. Since we have a year to use the 12 weeks I think I can strategically spread it out in an efficient manner. I.e. 2 free weeks around Christmas.

Yeah I am think long of doing 2 weeks right away and then spreading the 10 over the next 52 weeks. Should be fun.

My company gives us 4 weeks (12 is crazy! but really cool), but I only took a week off.  In fact I timed it so that I didn't start it until a week after we got back from the hospital.  I had family in town to help out for the first week, so there wasn't really much for EVERYONE to do, so I let them do their thing the first week, then I took my time off as soon as they left.  Worked out great - my wife always had someone around to help while she was getting settled into things.

Is this your first kid?  This was my third so we kinda knew what we were doing already.  For my first 2 kids I took every bit of my time off, but wasn't in sales at the time.  Now that I'm in sales it was really hard to justify taking 4 weeks off, especially because for the first good bit of the baby's life, Dad doesn't offer much value!

Congrats by the way!

Hey thanks!

This is kid number 2. First with this benefit. I’m going to take a week off starting at birth, and than I have a lot of family in for about a month. I’ll take a week when they leave. I can then use the 10 extra weeks at any point during the babies first year.

Good stuff, yeah we're able to break ours up here as well.  I really like that flexibility.

When my first child was born, I took about a week off.  Nothing is more important than spending time with family/bonding with your new child, HOWEVER, mouths don't feed themselves and someone's got to go win the bread.

We have 12 weeks and we’re paid a stipend that is essentially the equivalent of our commission… and get quota relief!

Yeah...well, we were, but recently we got acquired... but the benefit stuck!

It's so nice to not be penalized for having a family. This is a nice to have for men in sales, but a NEED to have for women in sales. I'm really proud of my company for how they empower women and how they work to bridge the gender pay gap.
