Eh- I respectfully disagree here. Pensions are obsolete- the only organizations that use pensions are the government and look how that's going! No for-profit can afford pensions and sustain themselves. Back in the day when life expectancy was a short and retirement years were few it was able to be supported but the financial liability to pay out for the rest of employees life- that's a tall order.

BUT; retirement contributions in some avenue I totally support and I think it behooves employers to incorporate that. The one caveat is smaller startups that offer equity which is a perfectly fair gamble for people to take the liberty of.

In fact, 401k match programs are great, you can roll them over and take them with you giving you the employee the ultimate freedom and not be tied to a single employer or lose the years you've contributed to the pension by leaving.

Just my 2cents!

I agree with most of what you said except the sustainability piece. ย They could easily sustain by taking less bonuses at the very top, itโ€™s not like the profit just disappeared...

I 100% don't care about pensions or RRSPs. I don't trust or expect my employer to be able to take care of me in retirement. That's my own responsibility. Just let me make good commission so I can save and invest as I see fit.

Feel like that's a pretty fair opinion. I worked for a company that didn't have a pension but had a good match and aggressive stock purchase program, but also didn't really give raises. I feel like if companies invest in your retirement they take advantage in other ways.
