Performance Review

Our performance reviews happen 3-4 weeks before the end of our fiscal year. My boss told me I wasn’t getting a raise because I wasn’t at my number. Well, I closed a multi million dollar deal before the end of FY and finished the year over 200% to plan. How do I address this unfair review and a raise? Would you talk to your boss? HR?

I would 100% talk to your boss about this.

I would absolutely want to schedule a follow-up meeting with my boss, and would also push to have performance reviews done after the end of the FY, to avoid this type of scenario.

I'd be prepared for them to tell you to pound sand, wait until next year, that's our process, blah blah blah. If you can make a compelling argument about what you specifically did to close the deal and how it impacted the team, company revenue, future sales, etc., that may give you a chance to rework your compensation.

I think you’re bang on @ChiDawg

Sounds like this was an attempt to preemptively address salary stagnation despite your wins.

First, it's bizarre to do a performance review before the year-end. Also if a multi-million dollar deal was on the horizon I'm sure it was documented and forecasted well before there were only 3-4 weeks left in the year so was that not taken into consideration when your performance was reviewed.

From my experience being both a manager and an IC, unless it's something in the category of harassment or something confidential HR will reach out to your boss or their boss and wonder what is going on and that could put a target on your back. I'd go directly to your boss with data like ChiDawg mentioned and see what their take is.

Lol, I’d address the fact your review happens before the end of the FY

Definitely would start with speaking to your boss and if things from there escalate, maybe skip a level if possible. HR would be my last resort.

I'd ask for a re-review.
