Personal development meets sales.

the two constants in my last 18 years as an adult have been sales and personal development. I have long wished to combine the two of them, especially after getting to lead teams and incorporate various principles of psychology and mental growth.

My question for you is, to what extent do you feel there is a need and want among sales professionals and leadership for peak performance and personal development principles, specifically designed and applied for the sales environment?

I think thereโ€™s a healthy appetite for it. Thing is, the minute personal development becomes a corporate requirement, it becomes a mandatory cult and loses buy in. Stipends for personal growth work just fine. People want to have control of what they develop and their own timeline.

Thanks for the thoughts! Any specifics of personal dev type stuff that your experience tells you is more in demand? Trying to get some solid market research.

Iโ€™m the wrong guy to ask. Personal development in my time was about curbing your afternoon cocaine habit, and how to Aerobicize the next morning.

IDK but I'd like to invest immediately time to corporatize the evolution of humankind. It's how all the best science fiction stories get started. I always wanted to be on the that shadowy all encompassing universe directing board - time to start living my dreams TODAY!

I think that having your team share (when comfortable) their personal goals for the quarter not relating to sales it gives you an opportunity to help bond and encourage betterment. This is not a call to require it or make them track their progress but an opportunity for them to have another external motivation and possibly support. I had a job do this and my goal was a simple one involving a weight point and mile time. I am not a runner and to put it mildly I was an enforcer in hockey as far as body type. My job didn't do much other than have enthusiasm for my goals, ask me a few questions on the progress and compliment me when I relayed I had reached my goal.

When done right it can be a nice feather in the cap, just don't use it as a weapon.

VGK could have used your enforcing last night. So much for defending the cup.

Otherwise, at the level above, integrated personal development can help create a goal oriented culture. If done right thatโ€™s never bad. But the spark has to come individually and honestly. For that to happen thereโ€™s gotta be trust.
