depends alot on the vertical; I found a ton of success in my last role selling enterprise SaaS into mining and oil & gas based on making it an incredibly relevant to reach out (ie, reading 10k/10q to find initiatives around cost cutting, seeing industry news or project updates etc)

Moved roles and selling into NPO space where we're breaking into a new territory, with a product very foreign to the space and have found that much personalization (looking into details about the org, ie events they've done etc) and it just doesn't yield the ROI that it had at my prior role

Company and role is the obvious answer (what they do and why you can help them with their day-to-day to focus on more meaningful tasks). But try to find something in their LinkedIn. Sometimes people give out some helpful hints on their interests/roles that you can tailor a message around. I score a fat meeting from a CEO's LinkedIn because I watched one of his videos and directly responded to it -- it didn't sound as salesy and was a more personalized approach.

both ideally as long as you're being relevant and providing value.

For LinkedIn I try to base it on the person. Depending how active their social presence is, you can usually get a good idea of a few of their interests and what they specialize in at work

I try and use both. For example, I'll say I see your company does XYZ and you have your hand in the X department. Our solution helps with XYZ and was hoping to get 15 minutes of your time to see if our solution can help save you (time, money, whatever your solution offers to help) Finally, (depending on how much stuff the prospect posts) I will spend a minute seeing if I can find anything cool they post about and say Noticed you were passionate about X. What a cool thing to be a part of. Anyways, thank you for reading my message. Hope to hear back from you soon {Prospect's Name}
Sincerely, Your name

I try to do a mix of both depending on the research I do. Think it all depends on if you want to message based on that persons role or something you notice about the company (i.e., shift in strategy/growth)
