I have a few "mentors" but one I very much keep in touch with. He has been a great reference, career advisor, and so much more. Quite honestly, I don't know where I'd be without him.

Crazy thing is we were matched during an internship without either of us having a say in it. We had our first meeting and clicked right away.

Mentoring doesn’t work for everyone, needs to come naturally, you need to click like Dave side.

when I met the person who mentored me he had one line that stood with me “slow feet don’t eat”

the interactions were definitely more informal and friendly, it pushed me even long after we lost touch

I've been a mentor both through formal programs (AA-ISP and #GirlsClub) as well as informally through open conversation and discussion that ultimately resulted in regular mentoring discussions. I've also had a few mentors myself over the years. In the formal programs, I've generally guided the protege toward regular conversations (bi-weekly or monthly, their choice) as well as them setting and owning the agenda. I mentor much like I do 1:1s, making it all about them, with me coaching and counseling and giving tips.

Overall I think it's necessary. We aren't alone in our worlds and mentorship (both giving and receiving) is a way to connect with other people and gain perspective. Being a mentor changed my outlook by shaping more of a giving mentality. I like giving and helping a lot, and the fulfillment I get when a protege is recognized or rewarded is one of the best feelings in the world! Yeah, a little sappy, but I get a real high out of it.
