Long term residuals make for nice checks after some tenure but there's a lot of risk with shitty management. The biggest benefit for me with the heavy up front is once it's in my account I don't have to worry about who will do what to it.

Feel like this is similar to when they ask kids if they're willing to not eat the chocolate in front of them and if they can go 15 minutes without eating it they will get another.  Obviously, I'd love a fat lump sum of cash right now, but know that the long term residual is the move

Or you could get the lump sum up front and invest that and make way more in the time you'd be waiting for your residuals.
