Picked the wrong job. What would you do?

Earlier this year I left an SMB AE role where I was a consistent top performer for another SMB AE role.

Main reasons I left were continual territory reduction, massive quota increase, and all the higher segments struggling so I didn’t see a path forward.

I knew people in the new company who showed me that most of the team hit last year. Most of the team had been promoted and they offered me a 30% OTE increase, so I decided to take it.

Fast forward a few months and this is what I’m faced with:

  • An SMB territory that is a fifth of the size of my old company because of how many reps they hired this year
  • 10-20% of the reps in my region hitting quota (current average attainment for Q2 is around 30% including ramping reps)
  • Roughly 20% of my territory telling me they’re cancelling or heavily downgrading (pure existing account role)
  • I am doing well and have made a positive impression with leadership, but almost everyone in the team is struggling
  • My manager was a promoted AE who is proving to be a major micromanager that’s very metric focused and dismissed my concerns about most of the team missing

I think I want to leave, but the main thing I’m concerned about is only being in the role for a few months and things being potentially challenging everywhere due to the current economy.

So what should I do War Room, stay or go?

Job hopping and short stints at a company are not bad.

Doing it all the time is.

Fail fast. Nothing wrong with recognizing you made a less than optimal choice.

But at least you have a paid job search going for you.

Love that "fail fast" don't be afraid to look for a new role. Going to be rough for sales for a little bit so explore and jump ship soon.

You have a compelling story for why its not a fit, and you're getting out reasonably early as a result. Just don't make it a habit.

Wait - you said you were doing well? Any reason you feel you personally need to jump?

MM team was all underperforming, quota for new FY was massively increased, our territory was getting carved up. Felt like there was no viable path forward and we were getting set up to fail. In retrospect I probably should’ve just moved to MM there, but hindsight’s 20/20

If you feel you need to go somewhere else then secretly apply while you're still employed.

"I think" indicates you are not sure... don't compound the situation by jumping too soon.

He already did. Just didn't get around to logging it in the CRM.

The fact that your in house mid market team doesn't make target wouldn't make me want to take that role either.

Be fearless. You're NEVER "bothering" someone. You're asking them to do their job.
