Pivot as IC or move into MGMT?

I wanted to get opinions from you savages. Both internal roles with my current company. I am interviewing for a management position to run 8 people and get an upgrade in title, but a mediocre raise in my opinion for the added responsibility. With little upside after that unless we get a new line of business or reorg the sales teams. Or move over to a larger IC role where I will make more money than the management role, but with very little room for advancement into management. Should I take the title and less money, or more money and no title. Either way, I would need to leave in 3 - 4 years with both positions to take the next big step. Thoughts?

Do you want to be a manager or an IC? That's the only question you should be asking yourself.

Personally, I'm in sales for $$$ and don't have enough interest in management to sacrifice earnings.

Eventually, I would like to be a manager.  I just don't know if I want to take on the extra hassle of MGMT with a meager raise.

If it's not a hell yes, it's a no. Sounds like it makes more sense to stick with AE for now and find a more appealing management position in the future.

as queen coups said, depends on what you want your future to be. If mgmt is your final goal, take that job. If you want to keep slingin like the rest of us degenerates, take the other

If you're a manager then your OTE will be more than all of your reports. But, of course the top producer will make more than you. People don't understand that. You're either cut out to be an IC or leader. Also as a leader, your earnings will come from options. If you can get into mgmt at your current company and then shoot for Director at another in some few years, you could potentially get a shit ton of options and make 100's upon exit at the right company.

This is is why I want to get into management because I have no plans nor have ever been the top salesperson at my company. I don't have the attention span to be that type of person unfortunately. I'd rather lead a team making $200k OTE with a fuck ton of options.

I am sure no one knows your goal better than you yourself, no one can tell what you should be doing but you.. I might want to jump to a Management role but do you??

What is it you want to do after the next 3-4 years?  What is that big step?   Because if it isn't moving up the management ladder...then there's no reason to be taking a management role and sacrificing $$ in the meantime.

Just my $.02

3-4 years would be a jump to a bigger company for more money on both IC and Management.  I like where I am now, but can see myself capping out on learning and growth in the next 3 - 4 years on both front.  I am a big believer in growth intellectually.

Sure, that makes sense.   I just don't know if I'd go into management for less money unless you saw that step as a means to an end - eg:  a management/director role at a large company can translate into a VP role at a small company downroad, so maybe that step is worth it with that end goal in mind.

CEO is the ultimate goal, and I think the road to that position is through the CRO position.  No opportunity for CRO at my current company, but I think that it is easier to get a manager job with a manager job.

Then it looks to me as though you have your answer - you have a goal in mind, and steps to get there!
