Planning the future. IT'S SO HARD

The Dilemma:

-Vested interest in my startup succeeding (1/5 of my equity has vested, aint worth much now though)

-Had 7 different bosses this year, was promoted, then demoted, then promoted. Rollercoaster.

-Current boss (as of 2 months ago) is quite literally, Satan.

-Boss #8, up and coming new boss seems like not satan. It might work

-I don't believe in the product anymore, and don't like the strategic directions we are headed. But think the NEWEST leadership could help

-Taking a few weeks off to finish the year and figure things out

WHAT WOULD YOU DO

Always have the new offer in hand before you jump.

Unless of course Satan is demanding a sacrifice, and it's you. Then invest in a lot of holy water and gtfo.

This is the best advise, if you know you're simply not wanting to be there anymore, I always had a foot in the other company before quitting.

It's easier to find a new gig while you're currently employed.

100%, it's so much easier. I've been lucky this year and haven't had the need to worry finding work but I've been without a job for nearly a year because they simply need this or that and it was so frustrating.

Definitely sounds like you need to plan your exit strategy but donโ€™t abandon ship without a life boat ready for you.

Collect offers than decide, especially in this markert. Dont leave without something line up, unless its really impacting your mental health

Get some options first. That's insane you've had so many managers this year

Keep pushing, but always look for an exit. Iโ€™m about to jump after 3 years at a start-up and I was one of their first full time hires. Just make sure you take care of yourself comp wise.

Donโ€™t leave empty handed! Get that offer, take some time off between gigs, start fresh. Good luck :)

Sounds like even when 5/5 of your equity vests it wonโ€™t be worth much either. Sounds like an uncomfortable situation.

Donโ€™t leave until you have an accepted offer elsewhere, but I would be looking for the exit if I were you.

It's always better to strap-on your parachute BEFORE you jump out of the plane. Look for a better company and collect offers, then decide. Either: (a) you'll find a better job, (b) things will improve at your current job while you're looking, or (c) nothing will improve at your current job, you won't find a better job, but at least you'll still have a paycheck (and can keep looking). Good luck!

You just said you don't like your direct manager, don't believe in the product, and the general company direction is poop. Those are some pretty big things to try and dust under the rug.

You could be just in a low point and speaking out of emotion and need to ride it out another month, but if that sentiment stays it's not worth staying for some hypothetical equity payout

At an very early start up, extremely innovative with zero competitors. Like a typical start up we make drastic changes often and are having a hard time closing our target market deals. Any advice how to stay motivated?
