Playing the credit card points game

I saw a post from JDialz in April (What is your favorite credit card? (bravado.co)) about recommending credit cards, but I wanted to take this topic in a different direction than some of the answers.

Focusing on the points - do you play the "points game" where you switch to 3-4 different cards each year and try to max out the bonus offers? What success have you had, any great free stuff you've gotten? I could also use a new card now, so if any current deals are going on let me know. (My last card was the Hilton Honors Amex and I already got the points bonus).

I dabble a bit (not as professional as the points guy who I shared the link for or anything), but my best reward was getting enough points to fly Business Class from Australia to New Zealand on Emirates, that was legit!

Churning is a full time job. I like to sign up, hit min spend, get points, cancel or ask to waive annual fee.ย

I am a big "points" guy.ย

App I use to stay on top of my loyalty cards StoCard

I am partial to SkyTeam for flights. BonVoy for Hotels. Avis for car rental.ย

I am from Canada... so my card experience is far different than USA where you can get a card, hit min spend, get points. cancel card. sign up again and repeat.ย

If you're looking for best all encompassing card, prep for a high annual fee.ย

In Canada.

AMEX Cobalt - best over all
TD Aeroplan Inf - best for flights/points/status climbers. Points on Car rentals, hotel, flights etc.ย
WestJet World Elite MC - for regional flying, $ spent. So corp bookings in my name get credits.ย
AMEX BonVoy - silver status guaranteed with 14 "free nights". EZ min spend. Quicker upgrade to ambassador status.ย
My corp VISA is no frills.

My american compatriots have much better cards/rewards available.

Churning can be fun if you have the time to keep up with it. I stopped when travel stopped.

Travel cards are where it's at.

Pay for absolutely everything with our shared AMEX and we get about 2k+ in discounts annually on flights.

Call me what you want, just sign the damn contract
Just keep in mind you can fucking trash your credit score this way. It can cause problems in the long-term.

Yes it does ding your credit score a little bit for each one, so I do try to limit to only a few cards per year

Few cards per year? Do you open a few cards every year?

Yeah. Usually I wait for a good bonus points deal to start one, but on average 2 cards a year I'd say

I give good swag for good existing customers. You gotta make it nice though. No coffee mugs or USB sticks.
