Politics on LInkedin: Yay or Nay

As political polarization across America increases, I am seeing more politically charged posts on Linkedin.

People have strong opinions about almost everything these days, but I wish there was a refuge from all the political talk on social media SOMEWHERE. Linkedin seems to me to be the perfect spot for a refuge.

I'm open to having my mind changed, but I don't enjoy politics on Linkedin. I'd rather pile onto CTOs doxing sales reps than read your opinions on immigration policy and the national debt.

Is it appropriate to discuss politics on Linkedin?

I hate that people are labeled one or the other. We should constantly strive to learn new things and change our opinion. This us vs them mentality is awful, but so widespread right now

Solid take. I think the problem with political discussion on social media is it's just not the right forum for it. I find if I talk to someone face to face or even over the phone its a much more reasonable discussion where we can find common ground. Social media (including LI) is so shallow. You just get shouted down.ย

Amen Cothrock. So much easier to type mindlessly online than to actually state your opinion to another human being you know is listening. Social media is not the place for serious political debate.

PREACH. context is so important and the ability to go back and forth and understand why people believe what they do. Even if you don't end up seeing eye to eye you get the opportunity to see a different viewpoint and try to understand it.

No. Americans have been conditioned to see there are "two sides" to a story.ย

This is false and leads to extremism on both ends.ย

There are facts and opinions. That is it. Opinions have been given the same platform as facts and it's sad to see that is what generates views/ad buys.ย

If someone's opinion is hate driven/racist/sexist etc. That opinion should have no weight, you shouldn't try and see anything from that point of view. Tolerance of intolerance is intolerable.ย

There are three sides to a story. Each person's side and the actual story.

This is exactly what I was talking about. You're giving weight to opinion, sthap...

It's not insightful to say everyone experiences things differently - that is a fact. Three things didn't happen. One thing.ย

I agree that Politics should be based on facts and not opinions. However, people aren't wired to have facts we are wired to have opinions. That being said, I couldn't agree more we need to use the facts to create our opinions. What I was implying earlier in this thread is we should be ready to change our opinion when a new set of facts shows our opinion might be wrong.ย

No, LinkedIn is for professional networking and updates. Not politics, religion, pictures of your kids, or hitting on people.ย

We're all aware that LinkedIn is essentially Facebook at this point, with splashes of beneficial content. I don't think half the things posted on LI are appropriate for what the site was created to be, let alone politics, religion, etc.

Absolutely not.

The world is so ridiculously partisan and divided, you cannot have a single issue stance without being labeled the extreme of either side.

This will hurt your rep with prospects if you chat over linkedin.

HOWEVER - if they post right/left stuff, use that to your advantage to rapport build over calls.

Massive cringe and a great way to alienate about 50%+ of your network and potentially ruin existing professional relationships and ย future chances with clients/recruiters etc.

There is a reason that Politics & Religion are consistent no gos, especially in non intimate settings. You can very quickly ruin your โ€œpersonal brandโ€ for lack of a better term and easily alienate people

No, especially in our field of sales/business development, ย if youโ€™re leveraging LinkedIn as a prospecting tool, might come back to bite you. Even if you donโ€™t directly share the post or post it yourself, your likes reflect on your timeline as well.

I'm never posting politics over LinkedIn in but I do support other that do especially with what is described as Genocide/apartheid thay is taking place you just can't stay silent as spreading awareness is maybe the only thing you can do to help people.ย

However, I'm not offended if people report this if they are consistent with reporting both sides.ย

But so far I see LinkedIn has waaaay more cooler heads ๐Ÿ˜Ž that strive to open their minds and engage in constructive conversation.

My opinion - if you lead with your politics, itโ€™s a bad play. Even if you believe the person youโ€™re engaging with is in total alignment. Because, there WILL inevitably be SOME sticking point that you donโ€™t agree on - and THAT will be all the prospect / customer will likely remember.ย

Now, if someone is wearing a MAGA hat - commenting briefly at the end of a meeting that you like the hat, without leaving room in the conversation to discuss it further - this give the prospect / customer the since that youโ€™re on their side, and allow them to assume their political views are completely in line with yours.ย

That is the rare occasion when commenting on politics has behooved me.ย

Hope you find this helpful.ย

Best,
AB

It's good to keeps tabs on it, especially when it affects ways companies you speak with conduct business. That's where I would think it would be relevant. However, I agree with @Cothrock on that there are not productive conversations on those types of forums. I don't think I'm the only one who might read some in a more negative tone than the person posting intended which just leads to a downward spiral.

Feel like growing up we were always taught to avoid 3 topics in public conversation with people you don't know well: sex, religion, and politics.ย

Yet those are the only topics we see on social media nowadays.

IMO if it doesn't give me a recommendation, a new sales trick to try, financial/side hustle advice, career info, etc. then it doesn't belong on LinkedIn. As interesting & inspiring as some people's "life" posts are, most of them should be kept on Facebook.
