Presentation Advice

I recently attended an event that had a captive audience of CTO types. I was able to present along with 5 other organizations. 4 of which were start ups.

Coming from an established company we could rely on strong real world examples of success etc. which made the presentation easier to handle and focus on.

Without fail, each startup presentation used the phrase "industry leading" or something similar.
During the open Q/A, each start up was stumped by a question like "if you're the industry or market leader, why haven't we heard of you?" Or, even worse "how are you the leader in a space that's owned by (insert enormous well known company that has a near monopoly on this process or service). This question more or less destroyed any momentum and mojo the presenters happened.

My main takeaway was to stay away from lofty, unproven statements in presentations like this.

Small moment to learn from and thought I'd pass this experience on.

This is excellent advice. I roll my eyes every time I hear or read "industry leading" and I'm just a damn AE. They should be prepared to back up that statement at all times.

“Industry leading solution that was founded 11 days ago.” Gotta be ready to back up the takes.

down voters are marketing spies
Disarm the audience. I start out with "what does this guy know about x?" Then give some bullet points about it. In industry for 18+ years etc. Show the value don't tell.

Another good one is to mention everyone is industry leading, but not the industry leader. You won't make friends on the panel but you'll gain some respect.

It was insane. Not one of the presenters was prepared to defend their statement and seemed truly shocked that they would be challenged. I was watching comfortably with some popcorn ha

yeah great point. In my industry EVERY SINGLE COMPANY says they are the industry leader. its SO annoying.

things like that do not make any impact in my mind. sounds like im right from your experience haha.

Startups always do this. Basically if they don’t they can not convince Vc/pe s. However they make the mistake by starting to believe their own BS

Ya, I think it was more or less their investor deck and pitch slightly adjusted to the audience.

Preparation means that you're ready for (and welcome) a challenge.

What I'm curious about is that if this happened multiple times, why the reps who followed the first to get called out weren't prepared. I'd be off to the side listening to other presentations and making adjustments.

2 of the people who fell into the trap were founders and I think that they were essentially doing the same presentation that they do to VCs etc. one of them claimed to be the industry leader in online collaboration tools, which like they certainly aren’t. That was targeted immediately. The moment he said it, you could see faces change. Very interesting experience.

Ouch. Really good to keep this in mind.

Glad you weren't one of those that fell into the trap.

Any "value statement" that can be "Me Too" by a competitor is not a good value statement. Regarding your example, size is not the only indicator of leader... innovation is often used as a standard. To not be prepared for that type of question is unprofessional.
