Determining Product Fit For Start Ups

I have always worked for larger tech companies, but a goal of mine would be working at a start up at some point. Curious how do you determine the product fit while interviewing at Start Ups. Especially Series A to Series C, when a huge pro is the equity, what types of questions are you asking in the interview?

What research are you doing to make sure this is a good product?

How do you determine if this product is a need or simply a nice to have?

Company should be growing revenue by 50% year over year -- ideally doubling.

Net dollar retention i.e. renewal rate should be >110%. Meaning -- their customers are renewing and expanding.

This is a really good one. If they are expanding the product certainly adds value

While interviewing do you ask this?

Absolutely - it's totally fair game. I dived into clients during discussion and asked to see collateral and some content that wasn't available on the site.

I think there's an article in the academy about this? People may not know they can see comments yet 😊

I checked the academy, there is the one "Breaking Into Tech Sales" and the interviewing ones. But I didnt see anything on questions to ask Series A-C to know its a good product

Gotcha. Hopefully things get fixed and folks come back in so we can get a good conversation started.

I would also investigate their competitors’ products and figure out if what they’re doing is significantly better. Then ask the company in the interview, “What’s preventing (competitor A, B, C) from just copying your features today?”

It’ll make you look smart to have done the extra research and you’ll get a sense of how unique/valuable their product really is.
