Prospecting over personal vs work email?

Hi Everyone,

A weird online encounter I just had last week. I usually never face this unless I use Lusha or get prospects.

The prospect I reached out too over Linkedin and was interested but instead of sharing his work domain email they shared their personal mail? I asked about their domain mail and they refused? Is that odd or is it just me?

Why am I worried? Usually I only use personal email when Lusha or get prospects only give me this option and I have 0 success with it.

Is it a common thing to use personal emails voluntarily?

Have you had success prospecting over personal email?

The only time I see personal emails being used is when I speak with owners of small businesses who aren't that tech savvy and don't have a domain email. If someone outright refused to give me their work email and I knew they had one I'd be asking why and would be very hesitant on spending time with that prospect.

this is common and understandable I didn't highlight it in the post but this person works in a well known application

I have had one recently where the contact actually didn't have a corporate email account. Other than that I'm not so sure your chances are good ๐Ÿค”

no the weird thing is that they work for a well known app so it's very odd that they shared their personal.

Yeah I would not prospect to someone's personal email. I may be different, but I do NOT mix work and home life. I do not want anything work related in my personal email.ย

Could be several reasons as others have said. Other reasons could be maybe they want to take your idea and propose it for brownie points? Maybe they are looking to jump ship? Maybe they have IT issues regularly?

I've CC'd my personal email before when we had IT problems, I like to think it made the prospect feel I cared enough to ensure communication even at the loss of some personal boundaries.

I would take this as the prospect is educating themselves rather than having a known business need, or they would be using their work email and circulating anything you shared that was valuable internally.ย

Linkedin is linked to my personal email other than that its always business, no surprises and full transparency. You have to trick them to a response its a bad deal and wont close

This has happened to me a few times. Sometimes prospects are just nervous about using their work email to talk with sales guys.ย

I will only prospect with my work email, never personal. I have also found that when I prospect gives me their personal email instead of their work email the meeting is never good.ย

They most likely want to employ you as a consultant as they can charge more for the services they consult you out for and so that you are considered a FTE from the start which keeps you with them. Also, they can let you go just as easily by claiming "Your services are no longer required anymore, thank you, Goodbye".
