Prospects Never Answer Their Phones or Respond to Emails

I work in a market where I'm lucky enough to usually have a cell phone or direct line to decision-makers, which is great...BUT I'm at the point where I simply cannot get prospects to answer their phones or respond to emails. This will be the third consecutive year where I've covered the same territory and there are still target prospects that I've never once been able to connect with.

I've used a local dialer to mask my area code in the past, but I've felt this puts a bad taste in the customer's mouth and the conversation usually begins on a "fuck you for being deceptive" note. Any creative or new ways that I should try instead?

There was a guy I worked with for many years that was a known Elephant hunter in our company. He discovered that the secret to hard-to-reach decision-makers is creativity. If he couldn't reach them on the phone or by email, he would work people in the company over for information. If he found out a decision maker was on vacation, he would create a gift basket for them when they returned and hand delivers it. Once he got in front of them, it was 99% response on the next call or email.

The key he taught me was to add value to yourself. He doesn't know you from any other schmuck. So make sure he does know you in a way that adds value to his job, life, or company.

Creativity will keep your job interesting.

100% agree with this approach. Especially reaching out to others in the organization focused on information gathering. I typically ask them if I can reference them and then put their name in the subject line (DM more likely to open).

Sending gifts is challenging in a remote environment (we use Alyce and itโ€™s okay).

Have you tired sending them a hand written letter? I usually send a nice letter with a jar full of my tears.

I just send a jar of salt now, because that's what my tears have become.

They call me Daddy, Sales Daddy
I hate local dialers. And since I don't live in the area code my phone has, I know its not a call I want to take.

Do you travel for your job? Can you do a "drop by" and meet up with them?

Otherwise, the best strategy I know is to go above them.

Sometimes having someone else make a few calls for you can make the difference. Do you have an SDR/BDR?

Re: emails especially - do you have an engagement tracker on your sends?

Like, something that'll tell you they've opened the email/clicked on something?

If not, definitely do. You can use it to triage whether your headline isn't cutting through, your messaging is off, your positioning isn't urgent enough, or there's someone better in the company to go through first.

I like the approach of calling someone else in the company. Someone who might not be a decision maker but might use your product/service. Let them know you are trying to meet with the DM but want to understand more of their needs as a user first. I find they usually appreciate begging heard and then you donโ€™t have to worry about going above them for a decision.

Then when you reach out to the DM, put that personโ€™s name in the subject line. This makes it more personalized. It also makes the DM see that you are truly interested in figuring out what might work for them instead of the standard salesy email.

My prospects don't have their phone numbers on any data bases cos their digital footprint is limited - but over email, A/B test a few sub lines and openers to see what works best. I'm now putting more effort into emails than calls cos my pick up Rate is 4%

Find a champion (person that benefits the most from your service but ainโ€™t necessarily the decision-maker) within each company. Build trust with them and get him to sell you in by turning him into your internal ambassador/lobbyist. Eventually, have him set up a call with the three of you (champion + decision maker + you)

I really dislike it when someone calls my cell phone and so dont do it myself. I think its too personal. I like the suggestions below to call/email others in the company and network you way into your target. I have seen people trying 3 or 4 people in a company where 5000 people work. With emails, try to figure out how to add more value. What insight can you offer that would lead someone to want to talk to you?
