Proud Moment

Just had a young kid I mentor ask me about a career in sales. That felt almost as good as closing deals. Always more than happy to recommend this lifestyle to anyone.

I let him know that obviously, this isn't for everyone; but I also showed hm the average income for our state vs the average income for a salesman in our state. I made a couple of book recommendations for him to listen to and encouraged him to research what type of product he'd like to sell.

What advice, if any, would you add to give to someone considering a career in sales?

How are you dealing with rejection? How would handle harassment even if you are excelling? How would you handle constant scrutiny?

Love it.ย  I've grown so accustomed to the rejection and jackassery that goes with sales just as part of the process that I forgot to bring that up with him.ย

Paint a very vivid picture for the kid. The honesty will make him reflect in a more effective fashion.

Iโ€™d start with this question: what drives you? And then share what made you (and still does) do this job. Iโ€™d go to the core.

Thatโ€™s great. He kind of hit me spur of the moment with this today. Weโ€™ll sit down again at another time, so Iโ€™m definitely taking notes.

You need to be comfortable having half of your pay varying month to month. You need to be proactive and willing to take control of your destiny. You need to be okay with having hard conversations most people won't want to have. You need to be resilient to continual rejection. You need to be goal-oriented. You need to be comfortable knowing a couple of bad quarters could mean you're out of the job.ย

I do my best. Not everyone can make it in this grind, however, I think everyone should try. Even if you majorly flop at sales, it provides great skills and resiliency that can transfer to literally any field (really all of life if you think about it).

Oh man, I should have talked to sales people before I started. Well I learned the hard way ๐Ÿ˜…

Didnโ€™t we all. Iโ€™m glad heโ€™s asking questions; but at the end of the day, thereโ€™s only so much that can be told. Itโ€™s really something you must experience yourself to fully grasp.

Be honest and tell him about some of the worst days you have had but then tell him about some of the best
