Unpopular Opinion: Leaderboards generally incentivizes quantity over quality

Excuse the hypocrisy here since I was one of the top 3 in the first leaderboard and I appreciate the prize that I received (which I’ll be making a separate post about) but I know from experience that the leaderboard was a prominent cause of toxicity which was one of the reasons for the pause on downvotes recently.


Since then, a number of improvements seem to have been made to minimize the toxicity:


  • Comments automatically gives the post an upvote by default (once per unique user commenting on the thread) πŸ‘
  • New monitoring functionality for the admins to detect problem users (details of which are unknown) πŸ‘
  • Reintroduction of downvotes πŸ‘


I think these are great steps to encourage better quality participation but do you feel these changes are sufficient in addressing how the leaderboard impacts content creation?

I’d have to agree. I love the commission incentive of the war room, it’s probably my favorite thing honestly. But I can’t see myself giving honest and valuable input on over 100 posts in a week...

I agree. A huge part of the charm of the Bravado War Room is the gamification element.

And, I think we are making the same point regarding the incentive balance between quality vs quantity.

For example, I love the β€˜hot post’ incentive: If your post gets 10 comments (not including the author) you get +10 commission (as long as that hasn’t changed recently).

I’d love to see higher tiers at the 25, 50, 100 comment mark. Great way to incentivize quality πŸ‘

Plenty of tweaks are coming. We have a whole Gamification 2.0 gameplan we've been working on... but of course first the app... then notifications... then portfolio... and in between whatever other hot fixes we gotta make

I think the number should be shown for the top 10 but no names - and only the winners get announced weekly like the usual WR Admin post.Β 

Like, we all know who are the serial commenters, and familiar faces in posts... it would be exciting to see who crosses the line.Β

I think your thoughts on this are interesting @SADNES5. I would also like an expanded top 10 board, even if only the top 3 qualify for prizes. Kind of undecided / indifferent about names vs no names but I see where your head is at here.

Additional thoughts on this: The very first Leaderboard was a shortened quarter (2 months and change I think), then we moved to the weekly format with the leaderboard and scaled the prizes accordingly.

I’d love to see the leaderboard shift to a monthly format @GeneralCorpΒ @sahilΒ I really think that’s the sweet spot.

Great question CadenceCombat. I think downvotes will do a lot to help people not spam posts/comments, but at the same time placing on the leaderboard is awesome since you get sweet sweet gift cards. I will say the posts seem to be better quality since they brought back downvotes and I'm hopeful it will stay that way

I totally agree that improvements have been made and are welcome. I’m not suggesting removing the leaderboard. I like the concept of a leaderboard…

Moreso just trying to provoke a discussion around what kind of participation the leaderboard encourages and if this can be improved upon for the community at large.
