Question for BDR Managers (or people with strong opinions of them)

We are trying to hire a BDR manager in the near future as my company is growing quickly. I have 0 idea what type of person I should be looking for. Who and at what point in your career do you become a BDR manager? Are you an ex-closer who decided less money and less black and white deliverables were more for you? (sorry that one is sarcastic).

I guess I don't even know how to properly phrase my question. I feel like anyone who would make a good manager should manage quota carrying reps (because in my opinion BDR manager doesn't have much of a career path outside of a "director of demand gen" position). War room, please help.

For the love of all that is holy, if he is going to be managing BDRs that make their money cold calling make sure you hire someone who has spent time actually doing this for a living.

BDR managers should definitely be someone who has a successful history of being a BDR and has no desire to be an AE.

But who is that person?  Motivated enough to be a manager but not enough to pursue anything else?  Just seems like a weird niche.

It is a weird niche, you do have your work cut out for you recruitment wise. But that's the best case scenario.

Not everyone wants a tough career, some people are comfy making pretty good money and having less responsibility.

Total side note - for some reason most of my war room notifications go to my "promotions" filter, but the ones from funcoupons dont.  Just a weird thing i noticed.

Best route.

BDR's aren't IC's and their manager shouldn't think like one.

They need to organized, inspiring, agile, and know how to bend their team without breaking them.

I'd hire that Director of Demand gen person who has a proven track record of managing a BDR/SDR team successfully.  They should be able to manage the tools BDRs use, should be able to train them on outbound calling and qualification and not rely on the sales team to do their work for them.

We need one too.

Agree with the sentiments posted in here, should have some real-life experience in cold calling as a BDR within the last 3-5 years so that they aren't a boomer at this point.

Make sure they are likeable as well, that helps lol

Nothing wrong with Boomers, they just need to be tech-savvy and familiar with the tools of the trade.

Agreed. Age doesn't matter - experience, skills, and personality do. I'll take a boomer manager that's spent some time in the role over a millennial who read one sales management book after college any day, and I'm a millennial.

BDR managers are hard to find for exactly this reason. I was one, but only because I got asked to be one. I was a BDR who was crushing it, and they wanted me to help get others to that level. Ultimately I wanted to make more money so I became an AE.
