Questions to Ask During Interview at SaaS Startups {Thread}

I've been compiling and revising a list of questions I like to ask while interviewing at SaaS startups. I'd love to get everyone's feedback and let me know some questions I might be missing.


  • What are the company's revenue targets for the next 2 years?
  • How has the company performed against it's targets the past 2 years?
  • What percentage of salespeople hit their targets each month/quarter?
  • What has the churn rate been over the past 12 months?
  • How much cash runway is in the bank today?
  • What are the top two use cases for the product?
  • What CRM do you use?
  • How do you generate quality leads?
  • Who's responsible for marketing campaigns?
  • Who is responsible for Business Development
  • What is the patch I'll cover's yearly target and what is the average contractual value?
  • What is the average sales cycle?
  • What does the current market penetration look like?
  • What tools do you have in place for your sales team?
  • What does the sales cycle of a new customer look like (weeks, months)?
  • What is the ramp up time for new sales reps?

A couple questions that show you are interested in what management is going to be interested in you being interested in (if that made sense):

1. How does your team go about onboarding a new process?
2. When it comes to professional development, what does your career trajectory program look like?
3. What does your retention rate look like in this department?
4. What do you see being my biggest challenge to being successful in this role?

I think a lot of these can be consolidated. "What does your AE tech stack look like?" will solve CRM, and tool in place questions.ย 

Also, it's important to ask about what expectations look like in the role. What are my activity expectations in this role? If they tell you to make 60 calls a day, run like hell.ย

For a SaaS startup, I'd like to know if there are competitors in the market selling a similar product. If so, the competition will pit the inexperience against you. I'd like to know how the company responds.ย
