Quota Attainment

So want to discuss this with the WR as I have heard a lot of discussions lately on quota attainment. I come from the world of if you don't hit 70% of your quota then you get put on PIP then eventually let go. I was recently informed that some companies have as low as a 30% quota attainment for their reps and they still get a pat on their back.

Now this is usually SaaS sales, but was curious on different markets and others experience with these numbers.

My experience is that if you are under 70% for a rolling-90 then you are headed for a PIP.

My last job was 85% on a rolling 180.  When I was told that, I asked the hypothetical in onboarding that if I hit my quota in the first 6 months, and went 0% the last 6 months, I would be fired for going 100% on the year.  The trainer dead-ass looked me in the eye and said "yes."

If "What have you done for me lately" was a person, that trainer fits the bill.

Some major companies will have a very large number of their reps making well under their quota, and no mention of a PIP.    It's because they KNOW they structured the go-to-market in a way that's impossible for reps to meet quota, so they don't penalize reps by putting them on a PIP.   It's insulting, however, and is the #1 reason I left my previous employer.  They didn't care that several of their teams were not in a position to be successful.

I agree and was the same way for myself doing Enterprise sales at a large company. Reps weren’t provided the resources to hit the goals set by the company, so most of us left for other companies that would utilize our talents.

My experience has always been if you are out there working, grinding, doing all you can and people believe this to be true, they won't fire you. Doesn't mean you should not be job searching though.

Funny enough. Most orgs with quota at X% or PIP aren't doing anything to actually aid reps in getting there. This is why you have to really dig in to what the JD and online reviews say. The way the JD is worded tells you exactly what kind of org you are walking in to.

I currently work for one of those companies where a lot of reps don't hit quota attainment but everything is still okay and there's no mention of a PIP. I'll admit I'm one of those not at the quota attainment but it's got me looking to other orgs where I could hit and make more money.

30% of attainment without being let go?  That signals to the rep that their quota is bullshit and doesn't give them a target to strive towards.

The problem was that the reps were paid a decent base so everything they sold was an “extra bonus”. I told them in the real world it usually doesn’t work that way, and enjoy working under that current management for now

It really depends on team and market conditions. I was with an org where if you finished below 100% for 2 consecutive quarters then you were put on a dev plan and then after that under 100 again you would be on a pip. That said the magic number at other orgs seemed to be ~80% now obviously if you had blown out your number in a previous quarter and didn’t have a ton of pipeline into the next quarter that would be taken into consideration.
